Potala Palace
The Pearl of the World’s Roof
Year of Inscription: 1994
The Potala Palace is located in Lhasa,
capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region of
China. The palace is named after Mount 布达拉宫 Potala Palace
(联合国 UN: 2013)
Potalaka, the mythical abode of the
bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.
Potala Palace, regarded as an iconic
landmark and symbol of Tibet, is a giant
palace complex consisting of many
houses, towers, chapels and etc. Due to its
spectacular architectural style, it has been
regarded as one of the most beautiful
architectural buildings in the world. The
palace served as the residence of the Dalai
Lamas of Tibet until the exile of the 14th
Dalai Lama.
