Dic Medicinal plants (PG 101) Level 1 Clinical Pharmacy-PharmD
Introduction
It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to Department of Pharmacognosy.
Pharmacognosy is the pharmaceutical science that is hidden in plain sight. In part that is
because it is a very broad-based science with applications in pharmacy, agriculture,
nutraceuticals, traditional medicine and phytotherapy, cosmetics, perfumery and essential
oils, aromatherapy, and the food industry. At almost any time during the day, there is an
application of pharmacognosy observable; it is amazingly pervasive in everyday life! It
has evolved from a descriptive botanical subject to a multidisciplinary field inclusive of
continuous advances in cell and molecular biology, ethnobotany, phytotherapy, analytical
chemistry, and phytochemistry.
The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge necessary to identify and
prepare a crude drug from the farm to the firm. Students should acquire knowledge
concerning dusting powders, plant cytology, physiology and medicinal leafy plants and
their taxonomy. In this course, the student will study importance of natural products,
preparation of natural products-derived drugs including collection, storage, preservation,
and adulteration. The course will introduce the students to the different classes of
secondary metabolites. In addition, the course will discuss and address the variability in
occurrence of pharmacologically active substances in certain official medicinal leafy
plants according to their WHO monographs.
I hope you enjoy studying this course!
