Medicinal plants (PG 101) Level 1 Clinical Pharmacy-PharmD
Naming:
• Substrate and the suffix ase i.e. lipase, urease
• Reaction and the suffix ase i.e. isomerase, oxidase
• Substrate and reaction and the suffix ase i.e. alcohol dehydrogenase, pyruvic
acid decarboxylase.
Classification:
1. Hydrolytic enzymes (hydrolases)
2. Oxidation reduction enzymes (Oxidoreductases)
3. Transferases which catalyze the transfer of specific group (s) from one molecule
into another.
4. Carboxylases, which assist the process of carboxylation or decarboxylation of
the substrate.
5. Addition enzymes i.e., which responsible for the addition or removal of certain
molecules to the substrate e.g., hydrases.
(Factors affecting enzyme action|)
1- Substrate and enzyme concentrations
2- Temperature
3- Medium PH:
• Basic pH e.g., Arginase
• Neutral pH e.g., Salivery amylase
• Acidic pH e.g., pepsin
