                                             Anatomy of primary plant organs

                  1-Root Structure

                  • A root consists of a central vascular cylinder (stele) surrounded by ground tissue
(cortex), and the epidermis (piliferous layer, epiblema).

                  • Root hairs provide a large surface area through which water & minerals/nutrients
                      enter the plant.

                  • These new cells are covered by the root cap that protects the root as it forces its way
                      through the soil.
