Hydrolysis
• Acid hydrolysis of Salicin gives glucose and a phenolic ether called saliretin which is a
condensation product of two molecules of saligenin
• Oxidation of saligenin gives salicylic acid, and this accounts for the medicinal value of
salicin.
• Salicyl alcohol metabolized as salicylic acid which is the active component of aspirin
(acetylsalicylic acid)…. Aspirin????
Coniferin
I s both an alcoholic or a phenolic glycoside.
