                  Liquorice T.S;  a,  cork;  b,  cortex;  c,  Ceratenchyma;  d,  crystal  sheath,  e,
                  phloem fibers; f, sieve tubes; g cambium; h, xylem vessels; I, crystal sheath:
                  j, wood fibers; k, medullary rays; l, starch in cells.


               Powder
                     Powdered Liquorice is light yellow in the peeled, or brownish-yellow or
              purplish brown in the unpeeled, and characterized by:
               1-  The numerous fragments of fibers accompanied by crystal sheath and the
                   fibers are 8-25 µ, mostly 10-15 µ in diameter.
               2-  Dark yellow fragment of xylem vessels, 80-200 µ in diameter.
               3-  Prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, free or in cells, 10-35 µ, mostly 15-25µ
                   long.
               4-  Numerous starch granules, free or in parenchyma cells, mostly simple, oval,
                   round or fusiform, with no striations but occasionally showing hilum, 2-20
                   µ, mostly about 10 .t in diameter.
               5-  Cork may be absent.
