Powder
Powdered Rhatany root is bright red to reddish-brown, characterized by:
1-Very numerous fragments of lignified wood fibers, 12-30 µ wide, having oblique,
cleft-like pits, and other xylem elements.
2- Few fragments of yellow non-lignified phloem fibers.
3- Dark brown fragments of cork and of parenchyma cells.
4-Reddish-brown masses of phlobaphene, crystals of calcium oxalate in monoclinic
prisms, 6-24 µ and occasionally in micro-crystals.
5-Abundant starch granules, simple rarely compound of 2-4 components, spherical
pyriform, triangular or plano-convex, sometimes with a central radiating hilum,
4-40 µ in diameter, compound granules are composed of one large and one or
more small components, 10-20 µ in diameter.
6- Sclereids are absent.
