Substitutes
A considerable variety of roots have from time to time found their way into the
European markets under the name of sarsaparilla, e.g., roots of Philodendron sp.,
rhizomes of Pteris sp., etc.; most of them are readily distinguishable from the genuine
drug.
RADIX IPECACUANHA
Ipecac, Ipecacuanha root; Erquel Thahab
It is the dried root or the root and rhizome of Cephaelis ipecacuanha (Brot)
A. Rich (= Uragoga ipecacuanha Baillon, Psychotria ipecacuanha Stokes), known
as Rio or Brazilian Ipecacuanha, or of C acuminata Karsten (= Uragoga
granatensis Baillon) known as Cartagena, Nicaragua, or Panama Ipecacuanha (Fam.
Ruhiaceae).
