328 Conversion

person’s understanding of a phenomenon can be altered by re-representing
it as an instance of a different higher-order knowledge structure. The work
by Thagard on coherence adds the important principle that theory change
requires a process that compares the relative worth of the resident and con-
tender theories. Theory-theory conflicts rather than theory-data conflicts are
the prime movers of theory change. These insights need to be incorporated
into the next generation of theories about belief revision. The theory pro-
posed in Chapter 10 proposes a new narrative of conversion that is based on
the principle that changes in core beliefs are brought about by success rather
            than failure.
