The writers’ strike affects not
only the writers and
producers affected by it, but
also the millions of people
whose lives have become
reliant upon the
entertainment industry.
Those workers who are
employed for television and
movie production will stand
to lose their income and
stability if the writers’ strike is
prolonged. This group
includes drivers, caterers,
makeup artists, editors, best
boys and sound technicians.
Should the strike last for an
extended period of time,
many of these workers will
end up unemployed while the
writers work to secure fairer
contracts with the AMTP.
Those who are not associated with the entertainment industry will also
experience an impact of the writers’ strike, although not directly. As fewer movies
and television series are filmed, fewer jobs exist in related fields, such as
commercial and advertising production. In addition, the delayed or cancelled
programming has a negative effect on the economic and cultural health of the
community that relies on entertainment and media as a service sector. Without
the income that comes from filming projects, local companies and services may
be forced to close or be downsized, leading to the loss of jobs and revenue.
