The strike has also highlighted the need for
further labor reforms in the industry, specifically
around the residuals system. Currently, residuals
are based on the number of plays or broadcasts
a program receives and are not reflective of an
actor’s contribution or the profitability of the
project. Additionally, there is limited
transparency regarding the underlying contracts
for production deals.
Furthermore, some actors are calling for the
implementation of a “clearance system”, which
would provide residuals payments to actors for
any material created by a production that gets
reused in other formats such as streaming. It
would also require “exclusivity agreements” that
would limit the use of an actor’s work to the
ITSUKI TAKAHASHI
production in which it was initially created.
At the time of writing, negotiations between the unions and studios have
been underway, but a resolution has yet to be reached. It is unclear how
long the strike will last or what the ultimate outcome will be. However, it is
certain that the dispute will ultimately affect the way the film and
television industry operates, and sets an important precedent for the
rights and protections of actors in the future.
