ULTIMATE PROJECT
The CAV Advanced Technologies team have been celebrating the success of a cross sector project this month. Bringing together partners from the automotive and aerospace industry. the Innovate UK funded project ULTIMATE (Unconventional Laser joining Technology for multI-MATErial products) focused on advancing a lFb based technology (TRL 3) up to a technology demonstrator stage (TRL 5/6) project.
The participating organisations were CAV Systems Ltd, Gestamp, TWI, Far-UK Ltd and Curtiss-Wright Corporation.
The Technology development was to enable highly dissimilar materials to be Laser welded together using productive industrial processes.
Two technology demonstrators were produced within ULTIMATE, one for each industry sector case study.
The multi-material automotive assembly used as a demo case was the Front subframe designed and developed by Gestamp and Ford Motor Company in a previous Innovate UK project CHASSIS (which won a UK industry award for Innovation in composite design).
Knowledge gained from the ULTIMATE project will be used by partners for further research activities in the field of multi-material joining.
