coincidence but the first serious violence I ever heard of followed not long after the identification of a particular area of the ground with the most hardcore fans. I wasn’t at the match concerned, against arch-rivals Newcastle in 1966 I think, but I heard about it from my mate Anth who was there. He said that every time he turned around in the Fulwell End he could see several bottles flying through the air. There’d always been intense rivalry between us but from then on in going to a derby game became potentially dangerous.
New chants quickly arose back then and God knows where they came from but every few weeks there’d be another, often a parody of a popular song e.g. (to the tune of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’), “We hate Nottingham Forest. We hate Liverpool too (and Leicester!). We hate Man Uniiiiiited but Sund’land we love you!” Another from a year or two later was (to the tune ‘Valerie! Valerah!’), “I went along to Roker Park to see the boys in red. I had a talk with Alan Brown and this is what he said Oooooooooooooooooooooh! I-an I-an Porter-field! I-an Porter-field!”
Another slightly later one that I used to like (to the tune of a late-Sixties hit by Steam) went, “Na-Na-Na-Na! Na-Na-Na-Na! Hey-Hey-Hey! Colin Toddo!” Todd, a local lad and a big hero, was the subject of “Hi-Ho! Hi-Ho! We’re off to Mexico with Colin Todd and his England squad. Hi Ho! Hi-Ho-Hi-Ho-Hi!” Sadly, Toddo never did make it to the 1970 World Cup in Mexico and the following year he was off to gain great success at Derby. Of course there was, “Jim-my!
