Chaaarlie!” especially when Charlie Hurley would trot upfield like a bull when we had a corner. providing moments of delicious anticipation as we hoped he’d score with one of his down and up off the goal-line headers. “A-G! A-G-R! A- G-R-O! AGRO!” was one of the most aggressive chants and would break out if trouble was spotted in the crowd somewhere.
I used to enjoy chanting and in 1968 got pally with a number of other regular lads in the crowd around where we always stood in the Fulwell End. I was only fourteen or so at this time and some of the chants were very juvenile and embarrassing to recall over fifty years later e.g. one lad would chant the word, “Knickers!” to which the rest of us would chant, “Off!” and this call and response would proceed as, “Knicky-knicky-knick-knocks!” “Off! Off! Off!” before getting decidedly anatomical. There was another similar chant where the protagonist would chant, “Dirty Bella!” to which we’d all reply, “Oooorggh!” and it proceeded, “In the cellar!” “Oooorggh!” “Did yer smell’a?!” And so on. An instrumental number which consisted of very rhythmic clapping with an, “Oooorggh!” thrown in at regular intervals was another one we all enjoyed.
On 9th November 1968 we played Manchester United shortly after they’d lost to Estudiantes in the World Club Championship. I was with my friend Keith and some other mates in the top right end of the Fulwell and we were
