For that reason the proceeds of this book will go to Roker Report%u2019s annual fundraiser for SCSK. Now in its 5th year, the appeal has so far raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the Soupie. We hope that the success of this book will help push that amount even higher.Structure Of The BookThe book starts off with the recipes themselves. There is both a standard English and a Mackem translation of each recipe. Give the recipes a go using the Mackem version first - it is more fun that way!Several of the recipes have alternative suggestions. For those that aren%u2019t vegetarian, save the gissies (a gissie is a pig - ask yer dar, and be thankful it isn%u2019t %u2018save the gallowers%u2019) shows how they can be made veggie friendly. Cannet be boshed gives you shortcuts. And gan git posh is for the residents of Whitburn. It then looks at terms related to food in the Mackem dialect. Inspired by the Mackem Dictionary, this section has a tongue-in-cheek look at the words we use and how we use them that leave those from outside the area bamboozled. There is also a degree of variation in terms used for food and drink within Wearside too. The next section presents results from a survey done for this book looking at where people stop asking for %u2018fish lots%u2019, and identifies where the great chattie/chettie divide is on the map. Finally the book looks at the histories of a number of people and businesses associated with the production and selling of food and drink on Wearside. Many of them are not around any more, but all have interesting stories and have made a large contribution to culture in Sunderland and beyond over the decades.Hopefully you%u2019ll have fun with this book, giving you a good laugh while also bringing joy through both the making of the recipes and the sharing of the results around your dinner table. Be sure to share your results on social media. Tag your photos to the accounts below with the hashtag #SoupKitchen24.
