Edinburgh to Fort William on the West Highland LineYour holiday starts in Edinburgh where we check into our well-located hotel with views of the city skyline. You%u2019re free to start exploring Scotland%u2019s beautiful capital before meeting the Tour Manager and group for dinner this evening. The heart of the city is a World Heritage site, with the Old Town%u2019s Royal Mile and the New Town%u2019s Georgian buildings. The city%u2019s galleries are world class, as are the Royal Botanic Gardens. On Day 2, we take the train to Glasgow to board the scenic West Highland Line. Passing Loch Lomond and wild Rannoch Moor, we catch glimpses of remote Scottish landscapes. At our Fort William hotel, a storyteller entertains us with %u2018tales of the road to the isles%u2019 taking us on a journey through time, before dinner.Days 3-4. Sailing to the Isle of Mull & Loch Linnhe cruiseAfter breakfast, a drive alongside Loch Linnhe takes us to the port of Oban. Here, we catch the ferry to the Isle of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides. Drifting past small islands enroute, views of the rugged coastline pass by. On a clear day, Duart Castle can be seen before docking at Craignure for a transfer to the island%u2019s main town, Tobermory. There%u2019s time over lunch to wander along the colourful harbour, famed for its fresh fish. We catch the ferry to Lochaline, then drive to our hotel. Day 4 begins with a visit to Neptune%u2019s Staircase, the longest staircase lock in Scotland. We continue to Loch Linnhe for a peaceful cruise, with commentary from our skipper. On land, a drive through atmospheric Glencoe showcases wild moorlands and gleaming lochs encircled by mountains. Dinner is followed by a traditional whisky tasting at our hotel.Days 5-6. Riding the Jacobite steam train & cruising Loch NessToday we board the vintage carriages of the Jacobite steam train*, on a scenic journey to Mallaig. We pass the highest mountain in the British Isles %u2013 Ben Nevis %u2013 before Scotland%u2019s seasonal colours loom into view. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as red deer. The route crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, passing Scottish villages and historic landmarks, enroute to the coastal town of Mallaig. There%u2019s time to pop into a caf%u00e9 or restaurant here before we head to our next hotel. On Day 6 we cruise magnificent Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle. Gliding into a landscape of mountains and fairytale forests we reach the 13thcentury Urquhart Castle, set on the banks of the loch. After exploring, tonight is at leisure in Inverness for you to dine independently.*On early/late season departures the Jacobite steam train excursion is replaced by the scheduled Scotrail service on the same route.Days 7-9. The Kyle Line to Eilean Donan Castle & homeward bound On Day 7 we ride on the spectacular Kyle Line, one of Scotland%u2019s most scenic railways. Lochs, waterfalls and wild landscapes roll by our windows before reaching Kyle of Lochalsh, a picturesque village looking out to the Isle of Skye. We take a guided tour of Eilean Donan Castle, once a stronghold for the Mackenzie and Macrae clans. After dinner we are treated to a wee dram and hear tales of myth, legend and monsters from a Highlands storyteller. We head back to Edinburgh by rail on Day 8 where we settle into our new hotel near the capital%u2019s Old Town.
