GLP theory emphasises the importance of responding positively to echolalic responses and the importance of echolalia as early stages of language development is outlined in Chapter 3. Gestalt Language Processing is not a clinical diagnosis. It describes a pathway of acquiring language. However, as explained above, it is important to note that not all autistic individuals follow the GLP pathway. GLP and a Total Communication ApproachWhat is a Total Communication Approach?A Total Communication Approach means the child or young person has access to a variety of means of communication to suit the individual%u2019s communication needs, the environment and the situation. The following is a list of different aspects of a Total Communication Approach:%u2022 Speech and vocalisations%u2022 Facial expression and body language%u2022 Actions or behaviours%u2022 Signing%u2022 Picture or object communication%u2022 Written language and drawing%u2022 All augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems including assistive technology and voice output communication devicesThis book adopts a Total Communication Approach to meet the individual needs of children and young people with speech, language and communication differences so that they can understand and express themselves by whatever means they can and will be responded to with respect in an inclusive and supportive environment.The theory of GLP development is outlined in more detail across this GLP book, with information about the underpinning theories and support that adopts GLP friendly practice as part of a Total Communication Approach.It is important to keep abreast of current research and evidence-based practices as well as professional guidelines when considering how to support a child or young person with speech, language and communication needs.
