The number of gestalts2. The number of mitigated gestalts3. Any reduction in the length of physical gestalts4. The number of novel self-generated utterances that might emerge.Once the child or young person has more than half of their communication as mitigated gestalts, they may show an emergence of self-generated novel words. The word is not echoed or split from a gestalt as in delayed echolalia. Instead, the novel words are those which are stored in their memory and the meaning and function of the word maps directly onto the word. The words are said to be %u2018referential%u2019 (Blanc 2012) because the word refers to a specific person/object/action using its conventional meaning. Another important indication of self-generated language is the child or young person using their own intonation patterns. The emergence of self-generated language means the child or young person is moving towards Stage 3.5.10 AAC FOR STAGE 1 AND STAGE 2GESTALT LANGUAGE PROCESSORSThere are important considerations when deciding how a child or young person may benefit from AAC. When supporting the use of AAC for Gestalt Language Processors, a consultation with a specialist speech and language therapist/specialist in AAC is advised.5.11 PAPER-BASED COMMUNICATION AIDSPaper-based communication aids include the use of symbols, photos and or objects. Paperbased communication systems may be helpful for children and young people at GLP Stages 1 and 2 with some important considerations and adaptations. The Gestalt Language Processing child or young person is likely to have differences in showing their communicative intentions using their gestalts. For the Gestalt Language Processor at Stages 1 and 2 it is important to try and work out the whole meaning of the gestalts whether these are single or multi-word gestalts. The conventional use of AAC involved mapping the symbol directly to each word e.g. the word %u2018bubbles%u2019 would be matched to a symbol or photo of bubbles. For GLPs the image used should represent the whole meaning of the gestalt with the gestalt (or script) written under the image as in the example here:
