The non-speaker may not indicate their preferred picture or photo or object. However, the supporting adults should think about the choice of visuals.Individualised Visual Timetables%u2022 Use photos associated with the whole experience rather than just an object%u2022 If using written labels add a phrase that is used; it does not have to be a single word%u2022 For transition and using First-Then boards consistently, use phrases associated with the photos. For example, %u2018Let%u2019s go to lunch%u2019 with a photo of the dining room. %u2018Time to line up%u2019 with a photo of the class lining up by the door.Power-based/Electronic Aids%u2022 Remember that the non-speaker may want to communicate and they may communicate through their behaviour. Communicating via behaviour can be a measure of communicative intent%u2022 Try a power-based electronic communication aid as part of a Total Communication Approach %u2022 Consider how a power-based aid may have a different purpose for the Gestalt Language Processor and be individualised e.g. if they enjoy singing songs then record these on the aidWhen adding pictures and voiceovers to power-based devices%u2022 Make sure the child or young person is happy with the voice chosen for the voice output on aids. The child or young person may be able to indicate and demonstrate their preference using non-verbal communication%u2022 Make sure the photos have meaning for the child or young person by taking photos of people in their lives, places they go, items they use and screenshots of films or videos%u2022 Involve the child or young person in choosing symbols particularly if representing themselves.
