            DEAD ENDEAVOURS WEEKEND
AT NE VOLUME MUSIC BAR, STOCKTON AND THE CENTRAL, GATESHEAD
The weekend of 1st October sees the gothic and alternative festival, Dead Endeavours, take place over two nights across the region, with the first night offering a theatre-style acoustic event at The Central Bar in Gateshead, whilst the second event takes place at our own NE Volume Music Bar in Stockton. Headlining both events is renowned Leeds- based singer-songwriter, Paul James Berry, who initially found fame as a founding member and lead guitarist of the critically acclaimed goth-rock band The Rose of Avalanche in the late 1980s. Counting bands like the Mission and the Sisters of Mercy as their peers, The Rose of Avalanche enjoyed significant commercial success, with several singles reaching the top 20 of the UK Indie charts, in an era where the competition was significantly more fierce than it is in the current day. After the band called it a day in the mid-‘90s, Paul embarked on a solo career which has seen him refine his sound more towards what gets described as “folk”, although with a distinctly darker twist. His latest release, 2016s ‘Spitfire Jukebox I’, served as a personal catharsis for Paul who had been involved in a life-changing road accident, with the sound stripped down, raw and haunting, echoing works by the likes of Mark Lanegan, Nick Cave and Scott Walker. Employing a sparse use of guitar, strings and Paul's own distinctive croon, both performances are set to offer a mesmerising experience. Rounding off the evening in Gateshead will be acoustic performances from three North East-based artists including dark-pop group Ghost//Signals, singer-songwriter Kieron Gallon and darkwave three-piece, William Denton Wilde. Our own NE Volume Bar will see a more electric-focused evening. Goth rockers The Golden Age of Nothing offer crunching basslines with soaring guitar melodies and deep baritone vocals, recalling the dramatic melancholy of bands like Fields of Nephilim and Bauhaus. Self-described “neo-futurists” The Jan Doyle band bring a synth-led EDM vibe, bursting with hooks and an equally memorable image to match. Completing the line-up are Darlington-based techno-industrialists Analogue Blood and a plugged-in performance from William Denton Wilde. Tickets for the Gateshead event are extremely limited due to the theatre style set up, whilst NE Volume Music Bar offers the opportunity to see some of the finest gothic, industrial and EDM acts the region has to offer in an intimate setting.
