HENRY PARKER
+ DAVID IAN ROBERTS AT THE ENGINE ROOM,
NORTH SHIELDS
North Shields is in for a massive treat this month as popular local venue, The Engine Room, plays host to two uniquely talented artists on Sunday 13th November. Yorkshire-born Henry Parker has spent the last five years playing headline gigs and supporting his musical heroes, including Michael Chapman, Wizz Jones and Bridget St John. A devoted guitarist from a young age, Henry was massively influenced by rock and heavy metal, emulating the sounds of Black Sabbath and Slayer. Henry's world was about to change though. He was introduced to British folk music revivalist Bert Jansch whilst at college in Leeds and fell in love with his emotive lyrics and finger-picking guitar style. Henry has since worked on crafting his modern acoustic sound, drawing on influences from 1960s folk guitar, progressive rock and modern jazz. From his debut eco-conscious album 'Silent Spring' in 2019 to the critically acclaimed sophomore release 'Lammas Fair' in 2021, Henry has honed his craft. His music is a unique amalgamation of ‘60s and ‘70s folk, a love of wild northern landscapes and rock beginnings. It is his latest release that has seen him emerge as a highly respected artist, blending original material with traditional songs. Hailing from Herefordshire, support act David Ian Roberts plays virtuoso finger-style guitar and has a unique vocal range. Taking inspiration from Nick Drake, Bert Jansch and Elliot Smith, David combines elements of classical, jazz and Indian music with ‘60s and ‘70s folk. David concentrated on touring after his debut release 'St Clears' in 2014. His subsequent releases are 'Travelling Bright' (2019), 'From The Harbour' (2020) and 'In Clover' (2022). Recorded solo from his Cardiff home, 'From The Harbour' has been described as "a quiet masterpiece" by Radio 2's Mark Radcliffe. David writes deeply introspective lyrics, drawing on both the natural and the mythological worlds; it is easy to be drawn into your world whilst listening to his unique juxtapositions. His gentle timbre is the perfect accompaniment to his sometimes unusual musical layering. Both of these artists combine traditional and modern sounds and are an absolute must-see if you like intricate guitar picking and beautifully crafted songs. KIM BLUE
