Speech and Language Support for 3-5sS7%u2022 Ask learners to find their checklist which you gave at the end of session 7.(Handout 7.6.1)%u2022 Ask learners to identify one aspect they want to change/develop re: using books in their setting.7.6.2 Planning for story time (Slide 210)%u2022 Ask learners for a show of hands - who plans for story time?%u2022 Pick a couple who respond and ask them to share what they do to plan. %u2022 Show the slide and make the points linking to contributions the learners might have made:o Story time should involve organising the children into small groups.o Follow the children%u2019s interests.o Differentiated on stage of language development.o That there is always new vocabulary identified to focus on. o That there is always a blank level question planned for. o That the children can lead in the story. o Provide opportunities to link the story with play e.g. resources in the role play area, inside and outside, and story sacks for the children to explore and enjoy.7.6.3 Towards storytelling %u2022 There are key stages:1. Sharing books so children become familiar with stories.2. Story retelling where children repeat the story in their own words. Story sacks are ideal for this.3. Storytelling where children have to have their own ideas and are able to put them in a sequence to make a story.%u2022 All of these skills need practice and 3-5s benefit from appropriate adult support.%u2022 These ORAL story skills are also essential pre-reading and writing skills.
