M K Bhattacharya appointed as the new ED of Indian Bank
Indian Bank has announced the appointment of MK Bhattacharya as Executive Director with imme-
diate effect. Earlier, he was Chief General Manager and Chief Risk Officer at State Bank of Travancore,
the bank said in a statement. Bhattacharya, in his more than three decade long career, joined State
Bank of Mysore as a probationary officer and held various responsibilities. He is an Associate Member
of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants, a post-graduate in Commerce, and a CAIIB, the state-
ment said.

B. P. Kanungo appointed new RBI deputy governor
The government appointed B.P. Kanungo as a deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In
a notification on its website, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) said that Kanungo will
take charge on 3 April, after present deputy governor R. Gandhi's retirement. Kanungo is a career
central banker and was appointed as an RBI executive director on 1 March 2016. He has been in-
charge of the foreign exchange department, internal debt management department and department

HSBC appoints Mark Tucker as new Chairman
HSBC has announced the appointment of a new Chairman as part of a management overall that will
also see it choose a new chief executive, following a massive drop in profits in 2016. British business-
man Mark Tucker, currently group chief executive and president of insurance group AIA, will take
over from Douglas Flint in October. He will lead the hunt for a new CEO to replace Stuart Gulliver
who is set to retire in 2018, the bank said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Yogi Adityanath sworn-in as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh
Yogi Adityanath was on 19 March 2017 sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh by the Gover-
nor of the State Ram Naik. At present, Yogi Adityanath is an MP of the Lok Sabha. So far, he was
elected as an MP from the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency in the 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and
2014 elections.
He was born on 15 June 1972 in Panchur, Uttarakhand. He completed his Bachelor's Degree in Sci-
ence from H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal), Uttarakhand. So far he was elected to the
Lok Sabha for 5 times. He was elected for the first time in 1998 and his recent electoral victory was Yogi Adityanath
in the 2014 general elections.
Arun Jaitley gets charge of defence ministry after Manohar Parrikar resigns
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was given the additional charge of the defence ministry on 13
March 2017. He was given the charge after Manohar Parrikar resigned from the post to take on the
role of Chief Minister of Goa.
A Rashtrapati Bhawan communiqué said that, "Shri Arun Jaitley shall be assigned the charge of the
Ministry of Defence, in addition to his existing portfolios". This is the second time that Jaitley is hold-
ing the additional portfolio of Defence Ministry during the present NDA government. Earlier, he was
