Isobel Somerton Y11
In 2019 Isobel was diagnosed with Griscelli - a life- threatening disease which affects her blood. The disease, which also affects her vision and balance, is so rare there are only around 60 known cases in the world. In March 2020 she was due to have a stem cell transplant from a perfect-match donor located in Germany, but then came Coronavirus and the operation was cancelled at the last minute. It finally went ahead on June 4th 2020.
Last year, Channel 4 interviewed Isobel and her family about the effect of the virus and shielding. April 1st 2021 marked the official end of shielding and the reporter, Jane Dodge - whose own children attended Arnold Hill Academy - returned to speak to Isobel and her family for an update on her health and how they had coped since the operation. We are delighted that Isobel is back at school which is a great tribute to her own resolve.
