In Turkey, despite a debate on the need to integrate the subject into the
school curriculum, media
literacy education started as an optional selective course in secondary
schools, although it can also
be taught in other courses such as language and arts.
In the UK, the subject of Media Studies at secondary and higher education
is a well-defined and
well-developed field. Media education specialist courses are available for
most students from the
age of 13, while media education is also a dimension of English teaching
through the secondary
School.
NB! However, media literacy education is minimal at primary level, where
there is a lack of evidence about how students are actually taught to learn,
read and understand media.
