Acknowledgements
It is virtually impossible to record, or even remember, the name of every
person who related an anecdote, or gave some titbit of information about
the personalities covered in this book. I am grateful to each of the many
people who came forward to help me in this venture. In particular, I wish to
acknowledge my debt to the authors of those biographies and
autobiographies that provided the foundation of some of the profiles. These
are Humphrey Evans (Thimayya of India ); Brigadier C.B. Khanduri (Field
Marshal Cariappa—His Life And Times ); Lieutenant General S.K. Sinha
(A Soldier Recalls ); Lieutenant General S.P.P. Thorat (From Reveille to
Retreat ); and Lieutenant General Mathew Thomas and Jasjit Mansingh (Lt
Gen P.S. Bhagat, PVSM, VC). I am particularly indebted to Mrs Priyo Batra,
who parted with the papers of Late Lieutenant General R.N. Batra; to
Lieutenant General Prakash Gokarn, who had started work on the biography
of Late Lieutenant General R.N. Batra and handed over to me the responses
of a large number of people to whom he had written; to Mrs Mohini Bhagat
for her impressions and a copy of the Commemorative Issue of the Bombay
Sappers Newsletter devoted to Prem Bhagat; to Thakur Amarjeet Singh and
Colonel Maharaj Guman Singh, for sending me the papers of Late
Lieutenant General Nathu Singh; and to Lieutenant General A.M. Sethna,
Dr Shernaz Cama and Brigadier Adi Sahukar of the UNESCO Parzor
Project, for making available a copy of the Souvenir and Film produced on
the occasion of the 90th birthday of Field Marshal S.H.F.J. Manekshaw.
Finally, I must acknowledge my debt to Field Marshal S.H.F.J. Manekshaw,
Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, Lieutenant General Z.C. Bakshi,
Lieutenant General S.K. Sinha and Lieutenant General Hanut Singh, for
having spared their precious time in going through the drafts and making
corrections. Sadly, Lieutenant General Sagat Singh passed away before this
book could be published.
