Mexico Futurity
LA BEDUINA CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
With a record turnout of 158 colts and fillies bred in Mexico and auctioned at the 2014 Hipodromo de las Americas, 17 trials were held on April 26 where the top 10 final- ists with the fastest times were obtained for the finals on May 17.
The event raised much excitement in the media. During the trials and finals, there was a festive and friendly atmosphere motivated by the interest of knowing which individuals would stand out early, each hoping to include in their record a classic whose prize is increas- ingly attractive to everyone.
The finalists came from heats 2, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13 and 15. Set Sambaso topped the list with an impressive :12.941 in race 13 under the leader- ship of Ismael Parra. With this record, he moved La Beduina Cartel to second position with a time of :13.027 in heat 2. Both seemed unbeat- able. As the program continued, positions were moved until confirming the ten finalists, who returned to the stage three weeks later.
The predominant genes among the runners where those of Corona Cartel, represented by 60% of the individuals including the sons of Sea Horse Corona (#3), Danny Cartel (#2) and Native Cartel (#1).
The start of the race defined the result.
It was Sea Corona who began the disorder
as he moved from gate 8 towards the inside and impacted Ze Dancer Jittered (#7) and Daver (#6), who in turn hit the favorite Set Sambaso (#5). While this was occurring in
the center of the track, those who were not part of the conflict carried out their race. Highlighted was the interior’s dark grey colt Lafishingonabugsmoon (#4), who was the first to cross the finish line’s 250 yards, well assisted by jockey Francisco Javier Fernandez, while both fillies from the right rail, La Beduina Cartel (#9) and N Sure (#10), crossed second and third respectively. The travel time was 13.06 seconds, for a SI 94.
From the review of the video of the race, the stewardess disqualified Sea Corona (#8) from sixth to tenth place for causing the above incidents.
Once laboratory tests required for indi- vidual participants were made, a banned sub- stance was detected. The result was protested by the trainer and a second test was per- formed which confirmed the initial findings. Lafishingonabugsmoon was subsequently dis- qualified from first place, and it was allocated to La Beduina Cartel, with N Sure in second,
and Set Sambaso for third. The chestnut filly, owned
by Cuadra San Rafael,
qualified by winning race 2
with 1 1/4-lengths in front.
She debuted on March 29,
achieving second place at
250 yards with this being her
third start. Her rider is the
successful Moises Gonzalez
Garcia, Jockey Champion
by Points and Classics Won
in the 2014 season at the
Hipodromo de las Americas. She was saddled by trainer Raymundo Sandoval for a race time of 13.13 seconds for a SI 90.
At the time of writing this report, La Beduina Cartel has qualified with 15.104 seconds and topped the list of finalists for the Garañones Futurity, held July 19.
La Beduina Cartel was bred in the State of Sinaloa on the premises of Cuadra La Presita of Dr. Anselmo Aguilar, also owner of the stallion Danny Cartel and mare Beduina Aguerrida (by Aguerrido). She is the first winner of a Clasico produced by Beduina Aguerrida, who in 2006 was champion in the Selecta Auction Derby-RG2 with earnings of $42,396. Her sire is a son of Corona Cartel out of the producing mare Takin Some Gold; also the dam of Foose Cash Sr who had 5 starts and earnings of $45,653 with a third place in the Golden State Derby-G1.
Of the total purse 1,624,875 pesos ($108,325 US, approximately) was allocated
to reward all finalists in proportion to the order in which they concluded. To the winner’s account, 812,437 pesos (US $54,162 approxi- mately) were paid.
The beautiful black filly
N Sure (Native Cartel - Sure Alibi) came in second under the command of Alejandro Gomez for Rancho San Antonio AJH; she was saddled by Andres Camilo Miranda Guerra and was bred by Salvador Oñate Ascensio.
The grey Set Sambaso (Sambaso Dancer - Jet Settin Jessie) took third place with the support of Ismael Parra;
he participates on behalf of Cuadra Falcon, was saddled by trainer Jose Manuel Martinez Garcia, and was bred by Everardo Muzquiz.
The order was completed as follows: Oak Tree Horse (Sea Horse Corona – Oak Tree Lassie), Dash To Horse (Sea Horse Corona – Dash To Watch), La Verda D Danny (Danny Cartel - Verdura), Daver (He Be Jess Special
– Cafeina), Ze Dancer Jittered (Ze Dancer – Too Jittered To Fish) & Sea Corona (Sea Horse Corona – Royal Band TB).
