Calif. Brds.’ Freshman S.
DYNASTY ENERGY
by John Moorehouse
Given the bloodlines of Dynasty Energy, there were high expectations for the two-year-old gelding and on July 25 he entered black type with a 1 1/2-length victory in the $25,000 California Breeders’ Freshman Stakes at Los Alamitos.
Home-bred by Parsons Family Limited Partnership, Dynasty Energy notched his 2nd win in four career starts. He also produced a $13,750 pay- day, nearly quadrupling his total earnings to $19,105.
Dynasty Energy was the class of the field in
this one. He broke well from the 5-gate and led by
a 1/2-length by the time he reached first call. That separation ballooned to a full length as he entered the stretch and was more than enough to hold on for the fairly comfortable victory. Christopher O’Dell trains Dynasty Energy, who finished the 350 yards in :17.576 and logged a 92 speed index. Jockey Tony Guymon drew the riding assignment.
Sired by FDD Dynasty, Dynasty Energy is out of proven competitor Terrific Energy, who won a pair of Grade 1 stakes, highlights in a career that included six total victories and reaped almost $182,000 in prize money. She’s also been productive as a broodmare, foaling six starters among eight total offspring and now a pair of stakes winners. The other stakes winner in the brood is Terrific Synergy, who was victorious in the 2012 running of the Governor’s Cup Derby-RG2.
The Fed X Choice (Royaltys Choice-Fed X Dash) was 2nd under Cruz Mendez for Erik Flores & trainer Jose Flores. Luv On The Run (Favorite Cartel-Luv In The Wind) was 3rd under Jose Nicasio for Jesus Nava & trainer Sergio Fiscal. Followed by Snitching (Walk Thru Fire-Departing), Secretly Fast (No Secrets Here-Shirleys Strawfly), in a DH for 7th Boylike (Walk Thru Fire-Feminista) & Trust Me Not (TR Dasher-Crooksy), DQ’d from 4th to 8th Bookish (Walk Thru Fire-Callan Rocks) & then Cartel Secrets (No Secrets Here-Lady In High Heels).
California Breeders’ Sprint S.
CHINA WALL
by John Moorehouse
Apparently, 20 was the lucky number for China Wall. Making his 20th career out, the four- year-old gelding tallied his first stakes victory by out- nodding Yacht Clubber in the $25,000 California Breeders’ Sprint on July 25 at Los Alamitos.
China Wall previously had black type, with three in-the-money finishes in stakes company, all in events at 550-yards, most recently a 3rd-place effort in the Scott Lewis Handicap at Los Al in February.
China Wall battled Yacht Clubber for the victory for the entirety of the 350 yards this time. Jockey Carlos Huerta brought China Wall out of the 3-gate on a good break, although Yacht Clubber was running in front by 1/2-length entering the stretch. China Wall overtook his rival in the final yards, taking the win by a nose.
Edward C. Allred, the owner of China Wall, banked a $13,750 prize to push the gelding’s earnings to $55,100. Scott Willoughby trains China Wall, who completed the race in :17.541 and registered a 93 speed index in the process while tallying his fifth career win.
Steve Burns, DVM bred China Wall & owns his dam Classic Sassy Chic, who won 6 stakes & earned over $220,000. The mare has 14 starters from 20 foals, with China Wall her 2nd to win a stakes race joining 2012 Ivan Ashment Handicap winner Classic Sassy Check.
Yacht Clubber (Walk Thru Fire-Big Jan) secured runner-up honors for owner David Sanchez and trainer Jose Moreno. Guillermo Suarez drew the riding assignment.
Burns, the breeder of China Wall, owns third- place finisher De Moss (Separatist-Classic Sassy Chic). The Michael Casselman trainee had Oscar Peinado in the irons.
New Look (Walk Thru Fire-Make Over) and Stel Heights (Stel Corona-Royal Heights) finished in a dead heat for fourth, followed by Energized (Separatist-Coronas Rouge).
