Independence Day H.-G3
THE STREAKIN CLEAN
by Tracy Gantz
Showing the quickness out of the gate that allowed her to win the 100-yard Hawkish Handicap, The Streakin Clean again dominated at Los Alamitos. She won the July 3 Independence Day Handicap-G3 in :15.192 for the fastest 300 yards of the current Los Alamitos meeting.
“She was awesome tonight,” said jockey Oscar Peinado. “She did everything like we were hoping she would do.”
The Streakin Clean broke so swiftly that track announcer Ed Burgart called it “an absolutely rocket start.” That gave her such an advantage over her four rivals that Peinado was able to hand ride her to the wire. She won by an easy 1 1/4-lengths as the 9-10 favorite.
Jaime Gomez trains The Streakin Clean for owners Leonardo and Javier Olmos. In addition to the 2014 Hawkish Handicap, the 6-year-old mare has captured the 2015 Miss Princess Handicap-G3. She finished 2nd in the 2012 Hadtobenuts Derby, 2013 Sun Downs Distaff Challenge and 2015 Charger Bar Handicap-G2 and 3rd in the 2011 Pot O’Gold Futurity, 2014 Las Damas Handicap-G3 and 2015 Cypress Handicap.
The Streakin Clean now could meet the talented Quirky in the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1 on Sept. 27 at Los Alamitos.

MOONIST
by Michael Compton
Moonist is a win machine. Ronald Hartley’s 4-year-old gelding added to his already impres- sive slate of victories with a score in the $100,000
Spencer Childers California Breeders’ Championship Handicap-RG1 at Los Alamitos on July 25. The 2014 Champion 3-year-old Gelding and Horse of the Year in California tallied the most decisive win on the California Breeders’ Champions night program.
As expected, Moonist was sent to the starting gate as the odds-on favorite. The accomplished runner did not disappoint. With regular pilot Cesar DeAlba in the irons, Moonist broke out but left the gate running. He immediately dashed clear of his 5 rivals and maintained his advantage to the finish, winning by a 2 1/2-lengths.
In winning for the 18th time in 27 starts, Moonist stopped the clock in :19.532 for veteran trainer John Cooper. A 4-time derby winner in 2014, Moonist has already won 3 stakes this season and is a single win away from recording 10 stakes wins at Los Alamitos.
“He’s the type of horse that keeps a horseman going,” Hartley said after the authoritative win. “Moonist is a once-in-a-lifetime type of horse. Without a doubt, he’s just something very special. He always has his focus on running.”
Bred by Vessels Stallion Farm, Moonist was acquired by Hartley for $21,500 at the 2012 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. The $53,500 winner’s share of the purse lifted his bankroll to $592,194. Moonist is out of Champion Your First Moon, dam of additional stakes winners Jess My Moon, Stray Cat & Moonin the Eagle.
Ed Allred’s Well and Good (Separatist-How Good), trained by Scott Willoughby, finished gamely to secure 2nd under Carlos Huerta. Randall Dees’ All Out Arrogant (FDD Dynasty-Oh So Arrogant), saddled by Cody Joiner and ridden by Cruz Mendez, checked in 3rd. Look of A Dasher (TR Dasher-Look Her Over), Last To Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Last Shall Be First) & Trust Me (Foose-Crooksy) followed.

CLOSING TIME
by Michael Compton
Owner Jose Gallardo and trainer Valentin Zamudio claimed Closing Time at an oppor- tune time. The connections nabbed the 3-year-old
gelding for $16,000 from breeder Ed Allred and trainer James Glenn Jr. on July 12. In his first start in Gallardo’s colors and just 13 days after being claimed, Closing Time annexed the $25,000 Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders’ Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 25.
Ridden by Carlos Marquez, Closing Time broke in and bumped after the start. Despite the troubled break, he battled for command throughout the 400 yards. After shrugging off early pressure from Captain Planet & Last Icy Morn, Closing Time held at bay a late bid from Walk the Catwalk to prevail by a head at the wire.
In capturing the initial stakes win of his career, Closing Time clocked the distance in :19.984, earn- ing a speed index of 85. The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse increased his earnings to $29,150 and improved his tab to 10-3-2-2.
Bred in California, Closing Time is out of Singles Scene, who has additional stakes winners Much Admired and Sadie Sis, as well as graded stakes-placed Single Sadie.
Walk the Catwalk (Walk Thru Fire-Alley Cat Cartel) closed fastest of all to just miss under Carlos Huerta. The 3-year-old sorrel colt is owned by Steve Burns and trained by Michael Casselman.
Last Icy Morn (First Down Dash-Icy Morn-TB) finished 3rd after overcoming a slight stumble. Cruz Mendez rode the gray gelding for trainer Jose Antonio Flores, who owns the horse with Bradley Hart.
Captain Planet (Walk Thru Fire-Corona Crystal), El Rey Coronas (Foose-Lotsalacy), A Goddess Thru Fire (Walk Thru Fire-A Royal Goddess), Walk the Dog (Walk Thru Fire-Kool Kue Chick) and Hot Shot (Walk Thru Fire-Girl Secrets) completed the order of finish.
