Calif. Brds.’ Matron Stakes
QUIRKY
by John Moorehouse
There’s nothing abnormal about the recent results tallied by Quirky. The 4-year-old filly charged to her 4th straight win on July 25 at Los Alamitos, going wire- to-wire in the $40,000 Calif. Breeders’ Matron Stakes.
Home-bred by Edward C. Allred, the current win streak represents the bulk of Quirky’s win total & bankroll during a 5-3-2 career record assembled over 12 total outs. All 4 wins have come in restricted or graded stakes events, all at Los Alamitos. The streak began last December in the Southern California Derby-G1, and continued earlier this year with wins in the Charger Bar Handicap-G2 and Ivan Ashment Handicap.
The rest of the 6-horse field in the Matron didn’t have a solution to Quirky’s winning ways. Trained
by James Glenn Jr., Quirky broke on top from the 5 gate under jockey Carlos Huerta and promptly built a 1/2-length lead by the 1st call. The filly added to her advantage with every stride, opening a 1-length lead entering the stretch & pulling away to win by 1 3/4-lengths. Quirky finished the 400 yards in :19.753 for a 91 speed index and the $22,000 winner’s purse to increase her lifetime earnings to $272,098.
The recent success made Quirky, who leads the dis- taff division at Los Alamitos, the betting favorite. She went off well below even-money odds. After the race, Glenn said that Quirky will return in September for the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap. A win there should qualify her for the Champion Of Champions.
Allred also owns Dont Pass Bar, the dam of Quirky and a 2007 mare who has produced four foals, two of whom have made starts.
Ima Foose (Foose-Sables Sixty Six) was 2nd under Oscar Peinado for Nancy Scane & trainer Patricia Visscher. Bring Me Home (Stel Corona-Bring Me Joy) was 3rd under Minor Arana for Marta Winslow & trainer Angela Aquino. Followed by Chalalita (Walk Thru Fire-Chalala), Girls Can Fly (Foose-Aviatrix) & Mrs Pickens (Walk Thru Fire-Pie Maid).

BLABBER
by John Moorehouse
Blabber provided a conversation-worthy perfor- mance on July 25 at Los Alamitos, scoring a rather comfortable victory in the $25,000 California
Breeders’ Debutante Stakes.
Edward C. Allred owns and bred the three-year-
old filly, who notched her third consecutive win
and fourth career victory in five lifetime starts. This marked the first stakes win for Blabber, who brought home a $13,750 payday that nearly doubled her prior career earnings to $28,075.
All five of her outs to date have come at Los Alamitos. Blabber made her debut last September, win- ning a 300-yard maiden that marked her only start as a two year old, before returning to the track this spring. This event, her debut in stakes company, took place after an absence of about two months from competition.
Blabber was all class during this 350-yard trip.
She broke on top from the 3-gate & charged to a 1 1/4-length lead by the 1st call. She continued to lead by daylight at every subsequent call, reaching the line sporting a 1 1/2-length margin over runner-up Skinny Jeans. Carlos Huerta rode Blabber to victory, finishing the race in :17.378 and registering a 98 speed index.
Blabber is the 1st starter out of Thinking Out Loud, a 2008 mare whom Allred also home-bred. The victory by Blabber was part of a stellar showing for Allred’s horses on the July 25 card, during which Allred notched 4 stakes wins as an owner and 6 as a breeder. Huerta also fared well, tallying 4 trips to the winner’s circle.
Skinny Jeans (Foose-Sables Sixty Six) was 2nd under Oscar Peinado for Nancy Scane & trainer Patricia Visscher. Ajs Annas Secret (No Secrets Here- Annas Kiss) was 3rd under Cruz Mendez for Anna McPherson & trainer John Cooper. Followed by Who Is Sylvia (TR Dasher-Kingman Kin), The Perfect Love (Hawkish-Red Hot First Love), This Girls On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Bonos Party), Chooser (Walk Thru Fire-Feminista) & Foose Flying (Foose-Fire Flying).

MISLEADER
by John Moorehouse
Afractious stint in the gate didn’t do anything
to dissuade Misleader when the gates opened. Edward Allred’s home-bred filly dug in to win the $25,000 California Breeders’ Freshman Fillies Stakes as part of the July 25 card at Los Alamitos.
Misleader tallied her 2nd victory in 4 career outs, and her 1st win in stakes company. Allred banked a $13,750 winner’s prize, boosting the career earnings of Misleader to nearly $20,000.
The filly didn’t like being in the gates prior to her first stakes event, but when it came time to run, she was more than up for the task. Misleader grabbed the lead by the first call, maintaining a slim advantage of a head as she entered the stretch and hitting the wire first by a neck. Connie Hall trains Misleader, who com- pleted the 350-yards in :17.756 for an 87 speed index.
“Misleader is a gutsy filly and she tries hard every time,” Hall said. “She can be a little hot and at times she acts like she’s afraid of everything. She just gets excited, but she ran a great race tonight.”
Jockey Juan Andrade was aboard as the filly became the 2nd offspring out of her dam, Fool The Boys, to win a stakes race. Misleader joins Fool The Guys, her full-sister and winner of the 2012 Mount Rushmore Handicap. Allred also home-bred Fool The Boys, a lightly-raced 2005 mare who has pro- duced four foals, all of whom have made starts.
Marko Czech (Corona Czech-Clydette TB) took second place by three-quarters. Owned by EG High Desert Farms, the filly is trained by Yanet Rodriguez and had Jesus Ayala in the irons. Shoulda Kissed Me (FDD Dynasty-Love My Corona) finished in third for Jose Gallardo. The Valentin Zamudio trainee had Carlos Marquez aboard. Joyous (Kiddy Up-Bring Me Joy), Goodbye In Her Eyes (Foose-Katie Katella), Knocking On The Door (Foose-The Partys On
Fire) and She Better Fly (Kiddy Up-Bet She Flys) completed the order of finish.
