lege. Dr. Rogers was awarded the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award for Diversity in Health Professions for two consecutive years. She was presented with the Iverson Belle Award during the AAVMC’s 2019 Annual Conference and Iverson Bell Symposium, which was held Mar. 8-10.
Happy Trails Raffle Of Bohlin Indian Chief Saddle
The Happy Trails Children’s Foundation will raffle off a Bohlin Indian Chief Saddle
on May, 18. This is the famous Indian Chief Saddle, built on a ranch/roping tree with a 16” seat, provision for double rigging, round skirts, and leather covered stirrups. It is partially hand carved in a floral pattern with large Indian Chief saddle bags made to match the saddle. The horn cap has the Bohlin designed sterling silver Indian Chief with two more smaller sterling silver Indian Chiefs on each side of
the saddle bags. The matching bridle has two sterling silver Indian Chief bridle rosettes and
a larger sterling silver Indian Chief Concho mounted on the centerpiece of the matching breast collar. Like other Bohlin made products, this saddle is collectible. You don’t have to be present to win. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling (855) 788-4440.
AAEP Foundation Celebrates 25 Years as Advocate for Horse Welfare
2019 marks the AAEP Foundation’s
25th anniversary. The organization was estab- lished in 1994 by a gift from the estate of the late Mrs. Halina Leonard. The foundation, which serves to improve the welfare of horses, has disbursed more than $5.4 million since
its inception to promising equine veterinary students, research projects, and benevolence efforts around the world.
2019 Senator John Melcher DVM Leadership in Public Policy Award
The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) has named Dr. Gerald W. Parker Jr. from the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences as the recipient of the 2019 Senator John Melcher DVM Leadership in Public Policy Award. The award is presented to current or former faculty, staff or students to rec- ognize leadership in public policy that advances veterinary medical education and success in advocating for veterinary medical education on
a national or international scale. Dr. Parker is Texas A&M’s campus Director for Global One Health and Associate Dean for Global One Health at the veterinary college, and the Director of the Pandemic and Biosecurity Policy Program within the Scowcroft Institute for International affairs at the Bush School of Government. He
is also a recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Executive Presidential Rank Award and the 2013 Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service.
ASPCA Grants Over $800,000 to Help Horses in Need
In 2018, the ASPCA awarded more than $800,000 in equine grants to assist
56 organizations across the country.
The grants supported an increase in equine adoptions, expanded safety net services, strengthened law enforcement’s ability to address equine cruelty and the Rescuing Racers Initiative, which aided in the rehabilitation and retraining of retired racehorse. The 2019 grant competition has been reimagined and renamed the Help A Horse Home: The ASPCA Equine Adoption Challenge. For more information, visit www.aspca.org.
2019 Mid-Atlantic Nutrition Conference
The 2019 Mid-Atlantic Nutrition Conference will be held April 10-11 at the Delta Hotels Baltimore Hunt Valley in
Hunt Valley, Maryland. The conference will discuss prevalence and risk factors of gastric ulcers in eventing horses, equine gastric ulcer effects on performance, Mitochondrial adap- tations to diet and exercise in performance horses, the use of oral joint supplements in the equine athlete, and nutrition in veteri- nary sports medicine.
