Dan and Kaye Jones of Kemp, Texas, have always believed in their stallion CRM Livewire, and he is repaying them as one of the top Paint stallions around. In 2018, CRM Livewire sired both Paint World Champions—RP Live Wire Dash in the solid division and Live Moonshine in the regular registry.
The Joneses bred and raced CRM Livewire, and they also bred and race Live Moonshine. Matt Whitekiller trained the sire to two World Championships and now trains this latest World Champion for the couple.
Live Moonshine won his World Championship despite having to miss part of his 2-year-old season.
“He had a little stress fracture in his shin,” said Kaye. “We turned him out and let that heal.”
Whitekiller debuted Live Moonshine at Remington Park in the trials for the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. Live Moonshine won his trial by a head and finished fourth in the final behind winner RP Live Wire Dash.
Live Moonshine avenged himself in the PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-G1, also at Remington. He qualified the fastest and then defeated RP Live Wire Dash in the final. Cody Smith, who rode Live Moonshine in all but one of his races, was aboard.
“Live Moonshine is chill to gallop, and on race day, he knows his job,” said Smith. “He’s a people pleaser and a smart horse.”
The stress fracture showed up after Live Moonshine won his trial and qualified the fastest for the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. The Joneses and Whitekiller weren’t going to take a chance with the gelding and didn’t run him in the final.
Live Moonshine returned to the races for the Pot O’ Gold Futurity-G1 trials and final at Will Rogers Downs. It took those races for him to get back to top form, which he did in time for the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
He had to qualify in rainy conditions, what Kaye Jones called “absolutely a lake.” That didn’t deter the Joneses from proudly standing with their gelding in the winner’s circle.
Live Moonshine had again qualified the fastest, and he went off as the 3-2 favorite in the final.
It took him a little while to get going, but with Smith back in the irons, he powered home to grab the victory by a head over Baileys And Rum.
Live Moonshine was the winner of 6 races in 2018, including the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & App Futurity-G1.
