2018 Record: 9-2-4(3)-2(1), $87,642, 2nd Speedhorse Graham P&A F.-G1, Speedhorse P&A F-G1, Victoria Ennis Mem.-G1, 3rd Cricket Bars F.
Admiral Tom followed his full brother Major Tom as Appaloosa Horse of the Year. Major Tom earned the title at two in 2013 and again at three in 2014. Admiral Tom emulated his big brother by capturing the 2018 Horse of the Year title as a 2 year old.
Gary Vaughan bred them both in Oklahoma. He sold Major Tom as a yearling, but he raced Admiral Tom.
The two Champions come from excellent bloodlines. Their dam, the Appaloosa mare Eyesa Knockout, is by Mr Eye Opener out of Appaloosa Hall of Famer Wego For Cash. Their sire is the Mr Jess Perry Quarter Horse stallion Red Storm Cat, a graded stakes-placed earner of $226,439.
Luis Villafranco trained Admiral Tom for Vaughan. The gelding raced primarily in his native Oklahoma and finished up his season in Texas. Admiral Tom competed in all three legs of the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown, and he was named the Hi-Point Champion of the series.
Admiral Tom began his career at Remington Park. There he broke his maiden in his racing debut, winning by an easy 1 1/2-lengths.
Favored at 9-10 in the Victoria Ennis Memorial Paint & Appaloosa Stakes at Remington Park, Admiral Tom finished second to the Paint Ima Real Livewire.
Admiral Tom added his second victory in his trial for the rich Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. Bettors sent him away as the 9-5 favorite, and he scored by a neck over the Paint Son Of A Grip. It was the second-fastest qualifying time.
In the final, Admiral Tom ran a good second to the Paint Memories Of Lil Hero, outfinishing several others in a close photo. It was an especially gritty performance considering that Admiral Tom had to withstand a pretty good bump early on.
At Fair Meadows, Admiral Tom came up against the Paint RP Live Wire Dash in both his trial and the final for the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. Both times Admiral Tom finished second, and RP Live Wire Dash went on to be named the World Champion Running Solid Paint-Bred.
Third in the Cricket Bar Appaloosa Futurity at Will Rogers Downs, Admiral Tom finished the year in the trial and final of the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
He finished third in his trial and fourth in the Futurity, cementing the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Hi-Point Champion title.
