North Star State Futurity
SUGAR RUSHH
Sby John Moorehouse
ugar Rushh broke into black type in just his
second career out, winning the $23,400 North Star State Futurity on June 7 at Canterbury Park.
Making his debut with a fourth-place run in a maiden at Remington on May 5, Sugar Rushh got to the winner’s circle this time and picked a fine opportunity to do so. The gelding stumbled at the break emerging from the 4 hole but led by a 1/2 length going into the stretch and picked up some additional breathing room during the final yards. Armando Alvidrez was aboard for the 300-yard trip, completed in :15.684 for a 93 speed index.
The win produced a $10,969 payday that represents the lion’s share of the gelding’s $12,318 bankroll.
Summer Run Inc. owns the two-year-old gelding, who also scored his first-ever win by 3/4-lenghts. Jason Olmstead trains Sugar Rushh and saddled the victor in the North Star State Futurity for the fourth consecutive year.
Darling Farms bred Sugar Rush and owns his dam, Candy Coated Paint, a lightly-raced 2013 mare.
Six of the nine horses in the futurity were Olmstead trainees, and he claimed each of the top four finishes. Relentless Minnie (Hes Relentless- Valiant Filly), the pre-race favorite at 1-2 odds, settled for second. Summer Run Inc. also owns
the gelding, who had Edwin Escobedo aboard. Third-place finisher Valiant Speed (Valiant Hero- Panamera) is owned by Tom Maher and had Alexis Ramirez in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was Averys Treasure (Moonin the Eagle-BBC PYC Luckycharm), Saturday Nite Gamble (Saturday Nite Romeo-Adelady), Darlin Hold On
(Carters Cartel-Eyesa Darlin), Cathy Wagon (Paintyourownwagon-Relentless Rock), and KQS Dreaming (This Chefs a Rockin-My Big Time). Vos Atonement scratched.
North Star State Derby
EOS WHISKEY GIRL
Aby John Moorehouse
16-1 longshot, EOS Whiskey Girl pulled off
a stunning upset in the $22,000 North Star State Derby held June 7 at Canterbury Park.
Angel Ramirez was in the irons as EOS Whiskey Girl broke on top from the No. 2 hole and ran away with the victory. The filly got stronger throughout in the 400-yard out, leading by 1-length at the first call, opening a 2 1/2-length advantage as she entered the stretch, and then coasting to a 2 1/4-length victory.
Ed Ross Hardy, Canterbury’s all-time top Quarter Horse trainer in both wins and money earned, trains EOS Whiskey Girl, who finished the race in :19.793 and logged a 99 speed index. The $11,647 winner’s share of the purse increased the filly’s total earnings to $28,512.
Home-bred by Corey Wilmes, the three-year- old filly made her second trip to the winner’s circle in five career outs, marking her first victory in stakes company. She was no stranger to stakes action, running fourth in last year’s Minnesota Futurity at this same track.
Wilmes bred the filly out of Saving Shirley, a 2010 mare. Aside from an allowance at Remington Park this past May, EOS Whiskey Girl has raced exclusively at Canterbury Park.
Jason Olmstead trains the other two horses who hit the board in the derby. Beep Beep Rev Rev (A Revenant-Etta Betta Zoom), the post-time favorite, settled for runner-up honors. Summer Run Inc.
is the owner and Edwin Escobedo had the riding assignment. Relentless Flash (Hes Relentless- Valiant Filly), the third-place finisher, is owned by Tom Maher and had Ramiro Garcia in the irons.
Blu Bye U (Jess Louisiana Blue-BBS PYC Luckycharm) and Rocking The World (This Chefs a Rockin-My Big Time) completed the official order of finish.

JESS UN SIES MAS
bTy Michael Compton
he hard-knocking 7-year-old gelding Jess Un Sies
Mas made his first start of the season a winning one, taking the Dolls Prodigy Stakes at Arapahoe Park on June 18 for the third time. The son of Apollitical Jess won the Dolls Prodigy Stakes in 2020 and 2021 and was runner-up in the 2022 event.
Ridden by jockey Martin Lazalde, Jess Un Sies Mas broke sharply on top and took command of the eight-horse field in the early stages of the 350-yard test. He increased his advantage through the lane and then held on late to score a wire-to-wire run by a neck at the finish. Sent off as the 5-2 race favorite, Jess Un Sies Mas covered the distance in :17.910 and earned a 91 speed index for trainer Jose Barron.
A homebred for Hugo Barron-Sierra, Jess Un Sies is now a winner in 10 of 23 lifetime starts, and the $10,920 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $123,667. The stakes-winning filly La Panama West (Panama Wes-JM The Dance), with jockey Pedro Gonzalez aboard, finished third just a neck behind the runner-up for owner/breeder Roberto Baeza and trainer Candelario Villamar.
