The Cypress Handicap at Los Alamitos hasn’t fared well at the start the past two years. In 2019, an electrical malfunction forced its postponement for a week. This year, the $25,000 race experienced a poor start on Jan. 17, with several horses bumping each other, including winner Tac Me Up.
Despite breaking inward and the bumping, favored Tac Me Up, ridden by Eduardo Nicasio, forged ahead. He passed runners quickly to reach the lead and score by a 1/2-length, finishing the 350 yards in :17.442, which was good for a 99 speed index.
Christopher O’Dell, who just days earlier received the award as 2019 Champion Trainer, conditions Tac Me Up for owners Ruth Barbour and Colten and Wendy O’Dell. The $13,750 winner’s share of this purse pushed the gelding’s lifetime earnings to $137,534. Tac Me Up also won the 2018 Autumn Handicap.
Garrett Firth bred Tac Me Up out of lightly raced Tacatrina, who has produced one winner in two starters. The family traces to the multiple stakes- winning Thoroughbred In The Curl.
Jesus Ayala rode Rite Quick (Favorite Cartel-Iba Quick Chick) to second for owner Alberto Rosiles and trainer Yanet Rodriguez. Rite Quick was coming off a second in the Super Sound Charge Handicap.
Jess Send It (Corona Cartel-Jess Send Me), owned by Keith Nellesen, and Ronald Hartley’s homebred One Proud Eagle (One Famous Eagle- Guy Chasing) dead-heated for third. Jess Send
It was ridden by Ramon Sanchez and trained by Monty Arrossa, while John Cooper trains multiple graded stakes winner One Proud Eagle, who was ridden by Juan Leon.
Completing the field were Eagles Policy (One Dashing Eagle-CC Policy), Singles Cruise (Favorite Cartel-Going Single) and CM Boom Shakalaka (Carters Cartel-Mi Fames A Dandy). Galloping Goddess and Jess A Cowboy were scratched.
