Magnolia Stakes, Div. 1
RACING KANE
by John Moorehouse
Racing Kane opened his 2020 campaign by win- ning the second stakes of his career, outrunning just three other competitors in the $24,250 Magnolia
Stakes Division 1, held Feb. 1 at Louisiana Downs. Jesus Coronado owns Racing Kane, a six-year-old
gelding who now has made 29 career starts—eight
of them victories. The $15,000 winner’s share of the purse from this race pushed his lifetime earnings past the six-figure milestone to $101,643.
Racing Kane earned his first stakes win late in 2019, taking the Races and Aces Stakes at Evangeline Downs in November. After an eighth-place run in the Evangeline 550 Handicap in December, Racing Kane had a layoff of about six weeks before returning to the track for the Magnolia Stakes.
Ridden by Juan Garcia, Racing Kane broke on top from the inside starting gate, dueling with Im Mighty Fast for the entirety of the 870 yards. A close second going into the stretch, Racing Kane rallied back to the front and made it to the finish line first by 3/4-lengths. Noe Sanchez trains Racing Kane, who finished the race in :46.826 to post an 85 speed index.
Janelle Simon bred Racing Kane out of Ms Janas Perry, a lightly-raced 2001 mare who has produced four offspring. Racing Kane, who is the lone stakes winner in the brood, is the most lucrative earner among Ms Janas Perry’s offspring with this result.
Im Mighty Fast (Mighty Corona-Sheza Fast Doll), who was running in the Magnolia Stakes for the third straight year, finished 2-lengths clear in second place. Triple C Racing Stables LLC owns Im Mighty Fast, a Ricardo Castillo trainee who had Rolando Cabrera in the irons. Shesa Game Changer (Dashin MVP-Toast Me Special) was third under Ubaldo Luna for owner Geral Dewitt and trainer Anthony Arey. Going To Hollywood (Heza Fast Dash-Alcea TB), the post- time favorite, finished fourth to complete the field. Midwayornoway scratched.
Magnolia Stakes, Div. 2
FREAKIN PATRIOT DASH
By John Moorehouse
Freakin Patriot Dash ran to his first stakes win on Feb. 1 at Louisiana Downs, taking the $25,000 second division of the Magnolia Stakes.
After breaking from the 5-hole, Freakin Patriot Dash was fifth at first call then started gaining ground on his foes. The gelding was third going into the stretch and came flying during the final yards, beating Mr Desert Streak to the wire by a nose. Pedro Lopez trains Freakin Patriot Dash, who com- pleted his 870-yard trip in :46.993 for an 83 speed index. Pedro Espinosa drew the riding assignment.
A five-year-old gelding owned by Jesus Huitron Lira, Freakin Patriot Dash collected his sixth victory
in 21 career starts. The $15,000 winner’s share of the purse improved the gelding’s total bankroll to $68,865.
Freakin Patriot Dash already was stakes-placed; he finished third in January’s Marathon Stakes
at Louisiana Downs, which also marked his most recent prior start. He also ran in last year’s version of the Magnolia Stakes, finishing sixth.
Bobby Touchet bred Freakin Patriot Dash,
who was foaled in Louisiana, out of Freakin Dash. Touchet also owns Freakin Dash, a 2005 mare who won two stakes races herself, both either restricted or graded events.
Mr Desert Streak (First Down Mr Jess-Miss Desert Streak), an 18-1 longshot, made a game run for second place for Geral Dewitt. The Anthony Arey trainee had Ubaldo Luna in the irons. JRS Natural Runaway (Sir Runaway Dash-BJS Cute N Natural) led for most of the race but faded down the stretch to finish third. Triple C Racing Stables LLC owns the gelding, who is trained by Ricardo Castillo. Rolando Cabrera did the riding.
Zoomins Jewel (Zoomin For Bux-Supers First Jewel), Hollyhook (Game Patriot-Hollyhocks TB) and Mr Mel (Jess Pop My Rocket-Rich Step TB) completed the field.
