Billy Montgomery Stakes Div. 1
PATRIOT ON ICE
by Michael Compton
Patriot on Ice broke his maiden over a sloppy track in his career debut last Feb. and the gelding took kindly to the off-track conditions he encountered when
going forward in the first division of the $25,000 Billy Montgomery Stakes Div. 1 at Louisiana Downs Jan. 18.
Over a track listed as muddy (sealed), Patriot On Ice and jockey Ricardo Hernandez Jr. broke sharply and dueled for the early lead in the 350-yard event. He pushed past race favorite Ms Diamond Prize in the lane and prevailed by 3/4-length over Strut For Petes Sake at the finish. In winning his first stakes race, Patriot On Ice stopped the timer in a lively :17.301, earning a career best 104 speed index.
A $7,000 LQHBA Yearling Sale purchase, Patriot On Ice improved his record to 5-3(1)-1-1(1) for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr. and trainer Alberto Solis, and the $15,000 winner’s share of the purse increased his bank- roll to $58,330. In addition to his recent stakes tally, he also finished third in the Mardi Gras Futurity-RG2.

Billy Montgomery Stakes Div. 2
RUNAWAY SECOND DOWN
by Michael Compton
In the second division of the $25,000 Billy Montgomery Stakes at Louisiana Downs, Runaway Second Down justified his favoritism, but just barely,
scoring a narrow decision in the 350-yard test. Ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr., Runaway Second Down raced in third position early. He hit his best
stride in the lane, collared the leaders close to home and won by a nose over Blueacrossyourmind at the finish. Runaway Second Down stopped the timer in :17.410, earning a 101 speed index.
Owned by Eulalio Argot and Victor Alvarado and trained by Robi Meche, Runaway Second Down ran his win streak to three with the score, improving his record to 9-5(3)-1-1. The $15,000 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $428,526. The gray gelding scored wins last year in the Lee Berwick Futurity-RG1 and the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile-RG2.
Grant Farms LLC bred Runaway Second Down out of winner Second Down Perry. She has produced 100% money earners from six starters. Runaway Second Down is her third stakes winner and top earner.
Blueacrossyourmind (Jess Louisiana Blue- Doievercrossyourmind), with John Hamilton in the irons, was second for owner Triple Cross Racing LLC and trainer Trey Ellis.
