JESS GOOD REASON
by Tracy Gantz
Paul Jones demonstrated why he is a multiple Champion trainer when he brought Jess Good Reason to a victory in the Charger Bar
Handicap-G1 at Los Alamitos on Jan. 8. The filly was coming off a Dec. 18 start in the Southern California Derby-G2 where she reared and left jockey Oscar Peinado on the ground.
“She’s had a few things happen at the start of her races,” said Jones. “It’s
been something we’ve been
working with her to improve.
We just want her to get a good break.”
That work paid off. With Peinado again in the saddle, Jess Good Reason broke beautifully and on top in
the 400-yard contest. Jess Good Reason flew home in a picture-perfect wire-to-wire win by 1/2-length in :19.584, earning a career best 96 speed index.
“It’s a real credit to having a good gate crew at Los Alamitos,” said Jones. “They go out of their way to do a good job. They do a great job working with horses in the gate. It paid off for me tonight.”
Jones trains Jess Good Reason for John & Cina Sperry, who bought the filly at the side of her dam, Jess Call Me Tieing, with the help of
Jones. Jess Good Reason had previously won the 2016 La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3, the 2016 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3, & the 2015 Holiday Handicap.
Preston and Karen Cloud bred Jess Good Reason out of winner Jess Call Me Tieing. She has has produced 100% money earners from four starters, including stakes- placed Make It Jess. Jess Good Reason is her top earner and first stakes winner.
Michael Pohl’s homebred Send Me This Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess Send Candy) finished second. Eduardo Nicasio was up for trainer Juan Aleman. Send Me This Wagon’s stakes victories include the 2016 AQHA Members Plus Stakes. Steve Burns’ homebred Little Talks (Favorite Cartel-Babe On The Fly) ran third under Cesar DeAlba. The filly is trained by Mike Casselman. Little Talks won the 2015 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and 2016 PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby-G3.
Completing the field were BF Fooserageous (Foose-BF Outrageous), Time For Jess (Apollitical Jess-Coronation Time), Time For Wine (Mr Jess Perry-Fine Wines), Sass Me Blue (Valiant Hero-Jess Sass Me), Jess Ravin (Corona Cartel-Jessica Ravin), Quirky (Stel Corona-Dont Pass Bar), and Thermonuclear Energy (Walk Thru Fire-Terrific Energy).
