Princess Jesse finished the 2016 season with her fourth stakes win of the year in the 400-yard $85,000 Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Handicap at
Sunland Park on Dec. 31.
Princess Jesse was out second from the 2-gate and
strode out to a slim, early lead under jockey Alfredo Sigala. There was little space separating the top three finishers, but Princess Jesse made the most of a strong closing effort and dug in for the hard-fought upset over Astica. The winning pair galloped the distance in :19.736 for an 82 speed index
Princess Jesse filled the coffers in 2016, earning $251,375. The $51,000 winner’s share of the Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Handicap raised her life- time earnings to $297,535 and her record now stands at 7(4)-4(2)-1 from 13 career starts for owner/trainer Vance Mikkelson.
Mikkelson bred Princess Jesse out of multiple graded stakes placed winner Total Miracle. The mare has produced 100% money earners from six starters, including stakes placed Kaydns Krusader. Princess Jesse, who also won the Zia Handicap-RG2, Sunburst Stakes-RG3 and the New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby, is her top earner.
Astica (Jesse James Jr-Alice K White) finished second under jockey L. Martinez. The sorrel filly is owned by MJ Farms and trained by Wesley Giles.
Teana Fay (Winners Version-Thirty Fourth Street) finished third under Jaime Leos for owner Jimmy Negrete and trainer Juan Gonzalez.
Sandys Jesse (Jesse James Jr-Sandys Fame), Get Down Bambi (Get Down Perry-Chilly Force), BI Corona (Southern Corona-BI Durun), Sweet Splenda (Send Me Cartel-Apollo’s Lady TB), My Royal Highness (First Moonflash-Easily A Royal) and Sixie Won (Ketel Won-Shelbys Twiggy) com- pleted the order of finish. Corona Southerndream was scratched.
ASOA Futurity
ARIZONA ICON

Arizona Icon closed out his successful juvenile season with a flashy come-from-behind score in the $20,188 Margie Bryan ASOA Futurity at Turf Paradise on Dec. 31.
Ridden by Vince Guerra, Arizona Icon required a few strides to find his best footing away from the gate. He broke seventh from the 7-hole and raced in fifth position early, but chased through the lane and drew clear to finish 1 3/4-lengths in front. The geld- ing stopped the clock in :20.186 to earn an 87 speed index. His connections include owner/breeder Las Vegas Ranch and trainer Matthew Fales.
The win marked the second stakes victory for Arizona Icon, who also annexed the AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity in October. The ASOA Futurity $11,766 winner’s share increased his earnings to $30,245 and improved his record to 6-3(2)-1-1.
A Las Vegas Ranch homebred, Arizona Icon is out of graded stakes placed winner Jess Perfect Girl. She has produced 100% winners/ROM from five starters, including 2-time stakes winner/top earner Jess Perfect Corona, who has also won the ASOA Futurity, and 4-time West/Southwest Hi-Point Distance Horse Jess Perfect Miracle.
Frozen Icon (Texas Icon-Icebreaker) finished second under Jorge Bourdieu for owner Martha F. Wells. The filly is also trained by Matthew Fales.
Sniper 1 (The Bounty Man-Secret High) led early and held third under Mark Jasso and for owner Juan G. Sepulveda and trainer Heraclio Botello.

May Be Fantastic SA brought the curtain down on his sophomore season the right way, win- ning the $17,500 Turf Paradise Championship on
Dec. 31.
Ridden by Emilio Tapia, May Be Fantastic SA
broke alertly from the 6-hole and grabbed the lead soon after the start of the 440-yard fixture. He drew clear through the lane and continued to widen his margin to finish 1 1/2-lengths in front. The 3-year- old colt stopped the clock at :21.826, earning a 95 speed index. The win marks his third consecutive victory and second straight in a stakes event.
Winner of the AQRA Turf Paradise Derby in his previous outing, May Be Fantastic SA picked up the $10,525 winner’s share of this stakes purse and lifted his lifetime bankroll to $47,956 for owner Orlando Guerrero and trainer Ubaldo Guerrero.
May Be Fantastic SA was bred in Oklahoma
by Gianni Franco Samaja out of 2-time winner/G3 finalist Darlin Treis. The mare has produced 100% money earners from three starters. May Be Fantastic SA is her top earner and first stakes winner. May Be Fantastic also finished third in this year’s President’s Open Derby and Arapahoe Derby Challenge.
Jess A Cowboy (Dejon-Secret Return) finished 2nd under Vince Guerra. His connections include owner Larry Stark and trainer Matthew Fales. Block N Tackle (Tac It Like A Man-Watchin The Rain) finished 3rd under Jorge Bourdieu. His connections include owners Ralph and Carolyn Fales and trainer Matthew Fales.
Quick Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Royal Quick Glass) was moved to fourth after Closing Time was DQ’d from 4th to 7th, and was followed by Bomb Diggity (Game Patriot-La Jolla Sioux), Fighter Gone Wild (Fighter On Fire-Wanna Know Now), Closing Time (TR Dasher-Singles Scene) and Shaboomator (Shazoom-Fontana Beaujolais). Heat Warning and Heza A Roya Jess were scratched.
