Holiday Handicap
ONE PROUD EAGLE

Although One Proud Eagle may not have impressed trainer John Cooper in the begin- ning, he certainly did when he started to breeze.
“He was always there, but you would look at all the big old horses and he’s a little guy on the end,” said Cooper. “When you went to breeze him, all of the sudden he come to the top.”
One Proud Eagle often comes home on top in his races, too. He capped off 2016 with a victory in the Dec. 30 Holiday Handicap at Los Alamitos. With Ramon Sanchez aboard for the first time, One Proud Eagle broke well from post six, got to the lead early in the 350-yard race, and won by a head in :17.677, as Sanchez didn’t even need to go to the whip.
Ron Hartley owns and bred One Proud
Eagle in California. Earlier in the year at Los Alamitos, the gelding won the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 and the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G3.
Cooper helped Hartley buy Guy Chasing, the dam of One Proud Eagle, privately. The mare has produced 100% money earners/ROM from two starters, both winners. One Proud Eagle is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Ed Allred’s homebred Tough To Figure (Walk Thru Fire-Big Jan) ran second with Gary Boag aboard. Scott Willoughby trains the filly, who broke her maiden two starts back.
EG High Desert Farms’ homebred Jess Hawk (One Sweet Jess-Merridoc Hawk) finished third for trainer Yanet Rodriguez and jockey Jesus Ayala. The filly’s four previous wins included the Pat Hyland Handicap.
Completing the field were Scholarly (TR Dasher-Now You Comeat Noon), One Sweet Jewel (One Sweet Jess-Shake The Magic), Bannister (Maknmoves-Goddess Artemis) and Janes Cartel (Corona Cartel-Unusual Jane TB).
