                                Mile High Derby
SILVER CITIZEN
by John Moorehouse
Silver Citizen was golden at Arapahoe Park, win- ning the $88,200 Mile High Derby on Aug. 13 to secure his first stakes victory.
Owned by Santos Lopez and trained by Miguel Pena, Silver Citizen finished second in his trial but there was no catching the three-year-old gelding in the stakes final. The seventh fastest qualifier broke well from the 5-gate, led by a neck at the first call and widened his separation at each remaining call. He was in front by 3/4-length entering the stretch and reached the wire sporting a comfortable 1 1/4-length margin. James Flores was in the irons as Silver Citizen finished the derby in :19.459, posting a 102 speed index—a new career high and his first in triple digits. Silver Citizen brought home a $35,280 payday, nearly doubling his prior earnings to a new total of $61,109 in 10 starts. The gelding has four lifetime wins, three of which have come this season.
Clarence Scharbauer, Jr., bred Silver Citizen and his dam, Red Alarm, an unraced mare who has produced 100% money earners from seven starters. Five of the seven have been to the winner’s circle, but Silver Citizen becomes the first in the brood to win a stakes race. Pena also trains Thru The Night (Walk Thru Fire-Night Lanes), a 19-1 longshot who surprised
in second place for Romualdo Tarango. Fernando Camacho did the riding. Air Force Won (Ketel Won- Forced To Win), the even-money favorite, finished third for Vences Quarter Horse. The Uriel Delgado trainee had Ramiro Garcia aboard.
The remaining order of finish was TLM Streakin Joy (Tac It Like A Man-Streakin For Joy), DJS Jessie James (Ivory James-My Girl Jessie), Runnin Along (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Think Twice About It), Swingit Lika Man (Tac It Like A Man-Swingin Cartel), Bo Dash Back (Bodacious Dash-Dash Back To Me) and Sneaker (TR Dasher- Intriguer). Bookish scratched.
