NYMPH
By Michael Cusortelli
Ed Allred’s Nymph, a homebred gray filly trained by Scott Willoughby, earned her third stakes win going wire-to-wire in the 350-yard California
Breeders’ Debutante Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Los Alamitos on July 30.
Ridden by Carlos Huerta, Nymph defeated You Can Fly by a 1/2-length in :17.476 and recorded a lifetime- best 95 speed index. The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse pushed her bankroll to $48,130. Nymph was com- ing off of a head victory in the 350-yard $15,000 Emma Bug Handicap for sophomore fillies on June 17.
Raced exclusively at Los Alamitos, Nymph has won four of seven outs, and her three stakes scores include last year’s 400-yard Corona Chick Handicap.
“This little filly breaks like a rocket, and she
runs as fast as she can all the way,” said Willoughby. “We’ve always liked her. She’s just a little small, so we didn’t run her much as a 2 year old to let her grow up.”
The filly’s dam, Elans Last, is a winning daughter of Separatist. A homebred, Elans Last has foaled four winners from six starters, including Last Chancer, a winning full sister to Nymph who was
a finalist in the 2013 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G1. The filly’s second dam, Elans Special, won the ’87 All American Futurity-G1.
You Can Fly (Walk Thru Fire-Babe On The Fly) races for Dr. Steve Burns. Rodrigo Aceves rode the homebred filly for trainer Mike Casselman. Strawfinders Jesse (One Sweet Jess-Strawfinder) fin- ished third for owners C.K. and Laurel Allen. Tony Guymon was up for trainer John Cooper.
Shoulda Kissed Me (FDD Dynasty-Love My Corona), Lady Perry On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Jess
Sass Me), Favorite Kiss (Favorite Cartel-The Goodbye Kisser), Mindys Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Miss Mindys Bar Bet), Hope For America (Separatist-Hope For Cope), and Maggie Durant (One Sweet Jess-Up Down Dash) completed the order of finish.

Rodolfo Arvizu rode Scholarly to the filly’s
first stakes victory in the $25,000 California Breeders’ Freshman Fillies Stakes at Los Alamitos on
July 30.
Prepped by Roberto Dominguez for owner
Kolleen Ledgerwood of Kennewick, Washington, Scholarly covered her 350-yard trip in :17.904. The filly’s winning margin was a neck from Red And Ready. Scholarly earned $13,750 to push her bank- roll to $19,675 from four outs. The filly broke her maiden in her career debut on April 9.
Scholarly was coming off second-place runs in trials for the Robert Adair Kindergarten-G2 and Ed Burke Million-G1 futurities.
Scholarly was acquired by Ledgerwood from breeder Ed Allred for $8,000 at last year’s Los Alamitos Equine Sale. The filly is one of three winners from as many starters foaled by Now You Comeat Noon, a winning 10-year-old mare bred by the late Spencer Childers, a longtime breeder who was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in ’02.
Runner-up Red And Ready (Walk Thru Fire- Coronas Rouge) races for Veronica G. Worth from the barn of trainer Paul Jones. Oscar Peinado rode the sorrel filly.
Cesar DeAlba rode Ilikethewayshewalks (Walk Thru Fire-Septacular) to a third-place finish for owner Steve Burns of Menifee, California. Mike Casselman prepped the homebred filly.
Captivating Cartel (TR Dasher-Haute Cartel) ran fourth and was followed by Ur My Princess (Walk Thru Fire-Thatsa Blazin Chick), Lupita (Corona Czech-Just Another Ticket), Lips Of
Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Rondini), One Sweet Bri (One Sweet Jess-Bsimjumpn), and Sheza Bridezilla (Walk Thru Fire-Sheza Habit). Hopes And Dreams scratched.
