NDQHRA Futurity
MR KING CARTEL
by John Moorehouse
Mr King Cartel followed his dam into black type, completely dominating his competition in the $20,000 NDQHRA Futurity held July 31 at
North Dakota Horse Park in Fargo.
A two-year-old gelding, Mr King Cartel reached
the winner’s circle for the second time in his fourth career start. His owner, David Wisdom, banked
an $8,400 payday that pushed the horse’s career bankroll to $9,965.
After qualifying fastest for this event on July 16, Mr King Cartel showed an abundance of speed in his first-ever stakes race. He broke on top from the outside gate in the 8-horse field and built a 1-length lead by the first call. The gelding won by a resounding margin of 3-lengths and set the 350-yard track record in the process, finishing in :17.896 to surpass the standing record of :17.992 set in August of 2005 by Fas Money Girl. Ed Hardy trains Mr King Cartel, who had Rusty Shaw in the irons.
Wisdom also bred Mr King Cartel and home-bred his dam, Shake Em Diva, who notched two stakes victories on the North Dakota circuit as part of a seven- win career before becoming a broodmare. All four of Shake Em Diva’s offspring have made starts, but Mr King Cartel becomes the first to win a stakes race.
Runner-up Giant James (Ivory James-Ms Devine Diva) is also owned by Wisdom and trained by Hardy. Zack Ziegler was the jockey. Whiskey Memories (Maximus Royal-Beduino Memories) hit the board in third for Screaming Eagle Racing. Jeff Charbonneau is the trainer and Jeremy Herman did the riding.
The remaining order of finish was Denim Dust (Winners Version-Two Eyes), Ramblin On In Style (Ima Ramblin On-Runaway In Style), Miss Royal Strawfly (Genuine Strawfly-Royal Wild Time), Winner Whisper (Cat Whisper-Winners Gray Company) and Miss Ramblin Moon (Ima Ramblin On-Major Luna Eclipse).

FLAY
by Michael Cusortelli
The only 3 year old in the eight-horse field, Flay parlayed a sharp break from the 3-post into a wire-to-wire, 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 Spencer Childers California Breeders’ Championship-RG1 at Los Alamitos on July 30.
Flay went 400 yards in :19.829 while earning
his first graded stakes win. Oscar Peinado rode the homebred for owners Thompson Racing, Inc. and Paul Jones, who also trains the colt. Flay has won four of seven starts, and the $48,000 winner’s share from his first graded stakes score pushed his earnings to $95,637.
Flay was making his first start since May 7, when he defeated a field of sophomores in the 400-yard $25,000 Dillingham Handicap.
“Paul and I wanted to test it and see where we were with Flay after he ran such a big race (in the Dillingham),” said Terry Thompson. “He’s been feeling good; our only question was that he’s been off for a while. Once he broke, I knew he had a chance because he always finishes.”
Flay’s dam, Summertime Quickie, is a stakes- winning and Grade 2-placed mare. She has foaled nine winners from 11 starters, including Foose, a half brother to Flay and the sport’s Champion 3-Year-Old Colt in 2008.
Forget It (Foose-Forgive Him), the 2-1 favorite, ran second for owner Hector M. Villalobos. Cruz Mendez rode the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Jose Moreno.
Fire Fortune (Walk Thru Fire-Sizzling) finished third, a 1/2-length behind Forget It. Rodrigo Aceves rode the homebred 4-year-old gelding for owner and trainer Jaime Gomez.
Fiery Kimbo (Walk Thru Fire-Kimbo With Class) ran fourth and was followed by Front And Center (Walk Thru Fire-Katie Katella), Walk The Catwalk (Walk Thru Fire-Alley Cat Cartel), Trust Me (Foose- Crooksy), and Look Of A Dasher (TR Dasher-Look Her Over). He Looks Hot scratched.

BH LISAS BOY
by Tracy Gantz
In 2015, BH Lisas Boy earned his berth to the Bank of America Challenge Championship with a victory at Emerald Downs. This year, he earned another
berth by way of the Bank of America Los Alamitos Championship Challenge-G3 on Aug. 14.
BH Lisas Boy broke fourth under jockey Jesus Ayala and quickly took over the lead in the 440-yard contest. From there he made it look easy, posting a 3/4-length victory in :21.456. The $33,332 winner’s share of the $74,070 purse boosted the geldings earn- ings to $136,628.
Bill Hoburg bred, owns, and trains BH Lisas Boy, who also won the 2014 Far West Futurity and 2015 Arapahoe Derby Challenge. BH Lisas Boy has also set two New Track Records: both for 440-yards at Emerald Downs in 2015.
“These horses like the distance,” said Hoburg, who credited the Los Alamitos starter, Gary Brinson, and his crew for helping school BH Lisas Boy in the gate.
Hoburg bred the gelding in Idaho from multiple winner Apollo Snowbound. The mare has produced 5 starters, all winners, including 3-time stakes win- ner Yin Your Eyes and multiple stakes-placed BH Country Chrome.
Jess A Cowboy (Dejon-Secret Return), bred by Larry & Phyllis Stark and owned by Larry Stark, ran 2nd under Tony Guymon. Matthew Fales trains the 4-year-old gelding. Donald & Peggy Boyle’s homebred BF Farm Boss (Hawkinson-Shirleys Strawfly) was 3rd. Carlos Marquez rode the 4-year-old colt for trainer Paul Jones. Followed by Dutcher (Apollitical Jess-Louisiana Eye Opener), Jake Gold BR (Gold Medal Jess-Charlotte Bryan), He Is The Risingstar (Mr Jess Perry-Meddlin Mischief ), Fire Fortune (Walk Thru Fire-Sizzling), Lotta Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Gotta Lotta Fame),
