KID CARTEL
by Michael Compton
Kid Cartel and jockey Francisco Fonseca-Soto came out on top in the $15,000 Hazel Park Futurity at Hazel Park in Michigan on July 30,
reporting home a clear winner in the 300-yard com- petition for 2 year olds.
In his previous start, Kid Cartel was the runner- up by a nose in the Gordon Mobley Futurity after winning his trial heat by 3/4-length for the eighth fastest qualifying position.
In the Hazel Park Futurity, Kid Cartel raced in contention throughout. He broke mid-pack from the eight-hole and was in second by a head at the top of the stretch.
Kid Cartel edged clear late as the odds-on choice of the wagering public.
The gelding covered the distance in :15.693, earning a speed index of 89 while defeating Seperate Feature and jockey Natasha Fritz, who were the early leaders, by 1-length at the wire.
It was the first stakes tally for Kid Cartel, who now owns a blacktype win and a stakes-placing from just three lifetime outings for owner/breeder Craig Zenenerg. The $9,000 winner’s share of the Hazel Park Futurity purse lifted Kid Cartel’s total bankroll to $53,030. The gelding earned a 90 career high speed index with his second-place finish in the Gordon Mobley Futurity.
Bred in Indiana by Zenenerg, Kid Cartel is out of three-time winner Cartels Glass Sliper. The mare, who earned a 102 speed index in her racing career has one other starter, Fear This Wave, who is also a winner.
Runner-up Seperate Feature (Inseperable-Moon Kissed Perry) flashed significant improvement in her third career outing. A 44-1 longshot, Seperate Feature led early but couldn’t match strides with the winner late. Patrick Easter’s homebred two -year-old filly is trained by Tim Eggleston.
Coming off a win in a maiden race, Saras First Card (Red Hot Rhythm-Elite Speedette) ran evenly to finish third under Santiago Mendez. The two- year-old filly’s connections include owner Sarah Torres and trainer Victor Olivo.
Promise Of A Man (No Secrets Here-Streakin RN), First Down Money Pop (First Down Dash- Gotta Money Pop), Steal The Rainbow (Identity Theft-Bad Rainbow Risin), Dreamers Hot Topic (Shotgun Windy-See Me In Your Dreams), Gogo Jangles (Feature Mr Bojangles-Precious Debutante), Heza Stone Runner (La Jollaroid-Sheza Stone Runner) and Zoomen Encounter (Zoomin for Bux-Foolish Encounter TB) completed the order of finish.
Cash Caravan Stakes
V OS FILO
by John Moorehouse
VOs Filo posted his second stakes win of the summer on July 31, taking the $38,200 Cash Caravan Stakes by 3/4-length at Canterbury Park.
V Os Filo prevailed against a field that included Little Bit Brandy, last year’s winner of this race. V Os Filo broke well from the 7-gate and was running a close second entering the stretch behind the 2015 victor, then chased down his competitors to make it to the wire by a solid margin.
Ed Hardy trains V Os Filo, who covered the 440 yards in :22.175 for a 97 speed index. Jose Montoya was aboard for the latest stakes-winning trip. Owner Rodney Von Ohlen reaped a $19,100 payday that pushed the total earnings of the gelding to $54,010.
Home-bred by Von Ohlen, V Os Filo also won the Bob Morehouse Stakes, held at Canterbury in June and was second in last year’s Minnesota Futurity. This marked his third overall win in nine lifetime outs.
V Os Filo is one of five stakes winners out
of Miss Eyewear, who Von Ohlen also bred, and
is now the third offspring to log multiple stakes victories. The other multi-stakes winners in the brood are Pithia, who captured two derby triumphs at Canterbury in 2011; and First Class Smarty, who holds five stakes wins.
Mountain Rake (Gone To The Mountain- Rakin Sweet Cash), a 10-1 underdog, beat Little Bit Brandy by a head for second place. Both are trained by Robert Johnson. Norman Miller owns Mountain Rake, who had David Pinon up. Stormy Smith rode Little Bit Brandy (Within Range-Little Special Flame) for Lowell Schrupp.
The remaining order of finish was I Am The Doctor (Love My M.D. TB-Aint No Game), Fishin In The Brook (Brookstone Bay-Hempeness), Irish Brew (Jess Zoomin-Irish Bailey Brew), Cokato Cartel (Carters Cartel-Southern Fun) and Gramma Ella (Knud With Wings-Whereshesupposedtobe).
NCQHRA Futurity
HEZA PROSPECT
by Tracy Gantz
Jason Olmstead regularly dominates the NCQHRA Futurity at Canterbury Park, and this year proved no exception. The trainer has won the race the past two years, and he qualified half the field for the Aug. 7 final. His trainee Chick In Eagle, the fastest qualifier, was favored, but instead 13-1 Heza Prospect, also trained by Olmstead, did the honors.
With Berkley Packer aboard, Heza Prospect jumped out to the lead immediately, though he broke outwardly and bumped with Bold Ruller. That didn’t deter Heza Prospect, who remained on top through- out the 350 yards to win by a nose in :18.074. The $27,200 winners share of the $54,400 purse increases Heza Propect’s earnings to $37,583.
Heza Prospect broke his maiden in his July 24 futurity trial, his fourth start. That proved the second- fastest qualifying time. Olmstead trains him for The Magnificent 7 LLC.
Karen Glasser bred Heza Prospect in North Dakota from multiple stakes winner Little Love Affair. The mare has produced two starters, including stakes winner Tinys First Affair.
Faster Than Hasta (Hasta Be Fast- Leadmetoyourladder), owned by John Johnson and trained by Robert Johnson, finished second under jockey David Pinon.
Burly Jenkins’ homebred Bold Ruller (Foose-Rita Alto) ran third for jockey Jose Montoya and trainer Edward Hardy. The gelding ran second in his futurity trial, his racing debut, to be the third-fastest qualifier.
Completing the field were B A Mighty Dream (Mighty B Valiant-Louisiana Blue Dream), Chick In Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Dashin Chick), in a dead- heat for sixth Mascoutah (Tres Seis-Perrys Splash N Dash) and Write Your Story (One Famous Eagle-All About Ease), First Flyin Eagle (One Famous Eagle- Gone First) and Lithe (Ivory James-Sinuous). One Famous Sign was scratched.
