ALSONO TB
by Michael Cusortelli
Alsono TB continued his dominance of the 870- yard division in New Mexico with his convinc- ing 2 1/2-length victory in the $30,000 Master Salls Handicap at Ruidoso Downs on August 7.
Prepped by Justin Evans for owner Rachel Marzak, Alsono was the lone Thoroughbred in the field. He covered 870 yards on a sloppy and sealed track in :45.228 under jockey Ry Eikleberry. The 5-year-old gelding posted a 102 speed index and his seventh win in as many outs at this distance.
All told, Alsono has won 16 of 29 races, and the $18,000 winner’s share of the Master Salls purse pushed his earnings to $441,747, of which $132,668 has been banked at the 870-yard distance. The geld- ing has won a total of 10 stakes, three at 870 yards and seven against Throroughbreds.
Alsono TB was bred in Kentucky by Ann Marie Farm out of winner Miss Blue Grass TB. The mare has produced six winners from seven Thoroughbred starters, including Gig Harbor, a half-brother
to Alsono who was a two-time stakes winner at Golden Gate Fields from 2011-12. Alsono’s second dam, Daloma (FR) TB, won the ’89 A Gleam Handicap-G3 at Hollywood Park.
CJS Rocksolid (Rock Solid Jess-Sultry Miss) was the best of the Quarter Horses entered, as the graded stakes winning 6-year-old gelding finished second. J.R. Valenzuela rode CJS Rocksolid for owner Rockin J Running Horses and trainer Tammy Johnson.
Straight From Texas (Fantastic Corona Jr-Too Tempting TB) finished third for owner and trainer Robert C. Williams, Jr. Larry Gamez rode the 3-year-old gelding.

DASHING FOR JEWEL
by Michael Cusortelli
Dashing For Jewel remained undefeated at the 550- yard distance with his neck victory in the $20,000 Brigand Stakes at Ruidoso Downs on August 14.
Ridden by Jaime Leos and aided by an 8-mph tail wind, Dashing For Jewel broke well and quickly moved into the lead. The three-year-old sorrel geld- ing had 1/2-length at the top of the stretch and held off a charge from Handy Mann to finish a neck in front. Dashing For Jewel tripped the timer in :27.014 while scoring his third win in as many outs at the 550 distance. Guadalupe Munoz Jr. prepped the gelding for owner DW Dynasty of Odessa, Texas.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Dashing For Jewel has now won a total of four of eight starts,
and the $12,000 winner’s share of the Brigand purse from his first stakes victory pushed his bankroll to $26,360, of which $20,880 has been earned from his three wins at the 550-yard distance.
Dashing For Jewel was bred by Chester Kight of Tarrytown, Georgia. The gelding is the first starter produced by unraced A Dashing Jess.
Handy Mann (One Famous Eagle-Slide Of Hand), a two-time winner and the 5-2 favorite in the full field of ten, ran second for owners Doug Benson and J Bar 7 Ranch LLC. Jose Alvarez rode the four- year-old gelding for trainer Mike Robbins.

The next best thing to playing and winning is play- ing and losing. At least you got to play.
This bunch didn’t qualify to the Zia Futurity, but they were eligible for the 400-yard $20,000 By By JJ Stakes on July 30.
Miss Call Me First ran second in her Zia Futurity trial heat, but in the By By JJ Stakes she left the number two post on the lead and the rest, as they say, is history.
