KINGSBURY
by Danny Camp
Bobby Dan Crenshaw played in the National Football League. He was a rodeo cowboy, a high school teacher and coach, and a horse trainer. The 1000-yard
race named after him had a purse worth $20,000 and was contested on July 30 at Ruidoso Downs.
Kingsbury stepped away from the number 8-post on top and quickly made his way to the rail. The gelding coasted down the backside for a wire-to-wire win 3 3/4-lengths in front. Kingsbury and rider Francisco Giles stopped the clock at :53.695 for a speed index of 86.
Kingsbury also earned the first place check worth $12,000, which upped his total earnings to $138,809. He now has a race record of six wins out of 29 outs. He is owned by Javier Beltran, Tony Sedillo and Tommy Galvez. Sedillo is the conditioner.
Bred in New Mexico by Rafter W Stables, Kingsbury herself is out of the dam Corona Lane, who owns a 105 speed index. She has produced four starters that have tallied 11 wins. Kingsbury is her first stakes winner.
The favorite, Jess A Hilbily Bone (Rock Solid Jess- Imaginiff) came in second place. His team includes owner Rockin J Running Horses and trainer Tammy Johnson. The veteran J. R. Valenzuela was in the saddle. Thoroughbred First Place TB (First Samurai- Right Place) reared at the start and was in last place, but when he settled down to running he ran down all but two of them to finish third under Miguel Perez. His connections include owners Benjamin King and Charlie King and trainer Greg Green.
Magnificent Chance TB (To Teras-Elusive Dawn), Blue Cres (Gonamakeyoureyesblue-De My Maureen TB), Mr Marcom TB (Mr Nightlinger-Miss Marcom), Shug’s Hope TB (Shame On Charlie-Shug’s Midnight) and Devious Chuchu TB (Devon Lane- Lady In Danger) completed the order of finish.
Adequan Evergreen D. Chal.
TOUGHIE
by Danny Camp
Evergreen Park at Grande Prairie in Canada was the place to be for the running of the Adequan Evergreen Park Derby Challenge.
The trials were hosted on July 16. Toughie had the second fastest time coming out of the trials after finishing second in his heat by a nose to fastest quali- fier Flybye 109.
In the finals, Toughie lived up to her name and her reputation.
After two of the qualifiers scratched, six of them lined up on July 31 for a shot at some of the $27,001 total purse in the Adequan Evergreen Park Derby Challenge finals.
Toughie had won five out of her seven starts coming into the finals, so the three-year-old chestnut filly had a reputation for winning when the money was down.
She didn’t disappoint, winning the 400-yard race by a neck, which seems to be her style. Just enough to get the money.
Toughie broke on top from the 3-post and led at every call for a wire-to-wire win in :20.125 earning and a 96 speed index. The filly earned first place money worth $12,960, which brings her total earn- ings to $102,468.
Toughie has a team that includes owner Charles G. Stojan and trainer William Leech. Ricardo Moreno, who has ridden her in five consecutive races including four wins, had the riding assignment for this contest.
Toughie was bred in California by Edward C. Allred out of two-time winner Hard Lining. The mare has produced four winners from as many starters, including top money earner/stakes winner Unchangeable. Now Toughie joins the list of stakes winners in the brood.
Fastest qualifier Flybye 109 (Special Fly Bye-Eyes Double Quick) got away good, but was second best on this day. The bay filly is owned and trained by Buckey A. Stockwell. Her regular rider Jose Rocha was aboard.
The photo showed that ER Café (Tres Seis- Hawks Halo) was in third place. He broke well and was able to get third place money for his team that includes owner/trainer Donalda M. Cochrane. Tyler Walker was at the helm.
Shes Gotta Reason (Good Reason SA-Mia Jones), HRH Tres Royale (Tres Seis-Trippys Royal Dash) and My Mr Millionaire (Pappasito-Rough Rebel) completed the order of finish. Kiddys Down and See Me Do It Too scratched.
Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity
IVORY LADY LEAGUE
by John Moorehouse
Ivory Lady League won her trial to the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity on July 13. The bay filly broke mid-pack under Scott Sterr. Ivory Lady League
steadily rallied and had the lead by the top of the stretch, holding on to prevail over a strong challenge from her competitors. The filly finished a neck in front and posted the sixth-best time qualifying to the stakes event at Northlands Park in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Ivory Lady League broke her maiden in these trials.
When it came time for the $41,269 finals on July 29, no horse was faster than Ivory Lady League, who prevailed for her second career win and her first in stakes company.
She ran the finals in similar fashion to the tri- als. Ridden by Tyler Walker this time, Ivory Lady League got away from the gates mid-pack once again and was near the back of the field at the first call. She did not stay there long, however, making a surge to the front and leading by a head as she reached the stretch. Ivory Lady League held on, winning by a neck at the front of a blanket finish.
Ivory Lady League brought home an $18,572 payday that increased her total earnings to $20,844. The filly finished the 330-yard stakes event in :16.842 for a 99 speed index. This time marked an improvement by more than half a second over her :17.345 effort in the trials.
Ivory Lady League is owned by Paige and Kevin Oberholtzer. Kevin also trains the filly, who was bred by Ralph Danard and is the first starter out of Rocky Mountain Lady, a lightly-raced mare whom Danard also owns.
Reds On Fire (Sizzlin Red Corona-Queens Strawfly) was the pre-race favorite after finishing sec- ond in his trial to the fastest qualifier. In the finals, Reds On Fire finished second by a nose under Scott Sterr. The gelding is owned by Mark Hranac and trained by Randy Cunningham. Munckin (Special Fly Bye-Cleats Rockette) was the biggest longshot in the field at 24-1 odds. The gelding was the fourth fastest qualifier after a late rally in his trial heat for
a third-place finish. Munckin placed third in the finals as well for WestWind Oil Field Services. The Buckey Stockwell trainee had Jose Rocha aboard. Followed by Streakinbabe (Streakinisanattitude-RJ Bitterroot Babe), Taylor Meyer (Mac Meyers-Pritzi Too), O First Flash (First Timber-Roco On The Run), Bringit Like Benny (Promised Class-Keep On Keepin On) and fastest qualifier Make Er Out (First Timber-Ima Jess A Streaker).
