Arapahoe Park Donates To Charities
Arapahoe Park donated over $20,000 to three equine-related charities based in Colorado – CANTER Colorado, which retrains retired racehorses; the Colorado Horse Council, which is the equine voice for the state; and Nighthawk Ranch, which provided equine camp experiences for children recovering from cancer. Positive Tests Result In Scratches At Ruidoso
In a out-of-competition testing pro-
gram overseen by the New Mexico Racing Commission, five Quarter Horses were scratched from stakes races at Ruidoso Downs after testing positive for Clenbuterol. These horses are now on the stewards’ list and will remain there for 60 days. According to the Paulick Report, four of the five scratched horses were trained by Ronald Stephens and included Big Spurs, the fastest qualifier to the $409,110 Zia Futurity-G1 that was won by Hot Indy Chick on July 31. The New Mexico Racing Commission also issued a press release in regards to the summit meeting, which was held in July. The development of a racing schedule for New Mexico was discussed at the meeting, as well as the need to review, evalu- ate, and change testing protocols.
Canterbury Park Revokes License Of Jockey Seth Martinez
Stewards at Canterbury Park revoked the jockey’s license of Seth Martinez for the remain- der of the 2016 race meeting, which ends Sept. 17, after the rider received his 10th and 11th violations of the three-strike whip rule since the season began on May 20. Minnesota Racing Commission executive director Tom DiPaquale stated that repeated and blatant violations of
the whip rule demonstrate a disregard for the welfare of horses, and that jockeys were advised prior to the meet that the riding crop rule would be strictly enforced. So far, 59 whip infractions have been issued during the meet. Martinez is eligible for licensing as an exercise rider.

Operation Gelding Receives Grant
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation awarded the Unwanted Horse Coalition (UHC) a $10,000 grant to help expand the program Operation Gelding, which provides funds and materials to help groups nationwide organize low-and no-cost clinics for owners who might not otherwise be able to afford to have their stallion castrated
by a certified veterinarian. In June of this year, the UHC approved an expansion of the pro- gram, increasing funding from $50 to $100 per horse gelded and offering a voucher option for transportation. Operation Gelding has supported 107 clinics in 29 states since it began in 2010, resulting in the castration of 1,348 stallions. For more information or to host a clinic on your area contact Jennifer Purcell at jpurcell@horsecouncil. org or visit www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org.
