One Hot Habit & Eduardo Nicasio hold for a neck victory
Day 2, Race #4
Paul Jones, a 14-time AQHA Champion Trainer, will
be gunning for his 4th All American Futurity win when he saddles One Hot Habit for owner Turner Farms.
One Hot Habit has been in Jones’ New Mexico program all year under the guidance
of Lisa Saumell. The Walk Thru Fire filly debuted with a 2 1/2-length victory in a trial
to the Ruidoso F.-G1 on May 28. Two weeks later, she lined up for the finals where she broke slowly & lacked the needed late kick, finishing 7th. One Hot Habit’s next start was her All American Futurity trial, where jockey Eduardo Nicasio got the call for the 1st time. Breaking along the rail in the 1-hole, Nicasio had One Hot Habit in front by the 1st call. They opened a 1-length lead on the field & then held off a strong closing charge by Ruidoso Futurity winner Apolltical Chad to win by a neck in :21.643. The strength of the trial was evidenced by the runner-up’s time of :21.685. One Hot Habit is out of Jess Another Habit, a stakes-placed mare who earned $98,374 at Los Alamitos Race Course from 2007-2008. Her offspring record includes 7 winners from 9 starters and 1 stakes-placed runner – Abeachindynasty si 98 ($59,396), who was 2nd in the Rocky Mountain Futurity & Derby. Jess Another Habit is out of the great Vessels Stallion Farm blue-hen mare First Femme.
Koolnfamous is 1 of 2 All American Futurity qualifiers for trainer Toby Keeton, who will also saddle Volcoms Lady on Labor Day. The 2 horses picked up the 4th and 5th qualifying berths from the 1st day of trials. Koolnfamous secured his spot in the All American Futurity gate with a daylight victory in the 9th trial. He was 1 of 3 qualifiers
ridden by jockey Esgar Ramirez that day. Sent off as the 2nd choice in the wa- gering, Koolnfamous left no doubt as to his talent, breaking sharply from post position 4. He easily dominated the field, opening a 1-length lead in the stretch before stopping the timer in :21.648. It was the 1st career win for the One Fa- mous Eagle gelding, who made his 1st start in a maiden race at Sam Houston Race Park in April. Koolnfamous was pinched back at the start of that race and finished a well-beaten 9th. Surfacing 1 month later at Ruidoso Downs, Kool- nfamous ran 3rd in a trial to the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 but missed a spot in the finals. He added a 2nd-place finish to his record 5 weeks later in a trial to the Rainbow Futurity-G1, again without securing a qualifying time. His continual improvement continued in the All American trials, where he became the 1st winner to represent his dam, Kool Fire. She is a winning daughter of Kool Kue Chick, a 1/2-sister to 2-time Champion Aged Mare Kool Kue Baby.
