It didn’t take long for Jess Fire Chick’s con- nections to discover she was one of those “real deal” two year olds. She held together as tight
as a drum through six freshman starts, banking $325,795 after winning the RG3 Mountain Top QH Futurity on June 16 and, just over a month later, the RG1 Zia QH Futurity, both at Ru- idoso. That was a grueling challenge when you consider there were four outs (trials and finals) crammed into a small time slot.
The filly finished off the board only once in her six attempts, winning four and coming in third once.
After he earned nearly $223,000, his connections remarked, “Well, I guess this means embryo transfer foals can run!”
   NM Champion QH Two-Year-Old Colt/Gelding
No Mires A La Luna
(First Moonflash-Dont Looke Ethel, Genuine Strawfly)
Bred by: Byron Woodard
Owned by: David Valdez and Byron Woodard Trained by: Trey Ellis
2018: 8-0-3-2 $306,236
The bay gelding known as No Mires A La Luna earned a 92 speed index after making eight freshman starts. Fortunately, his races were all daytime events – an important con- sideration since his name means “Don’t Look at the Moon.”
No Mires A La Luna recorded no victories during his first season, but he did participate in some serious races, including the RG3 Mountain Top Futurity and the open compa- ny G1 All American Futurity. Both races were at Ruidoso and the gelding recorded a third place finish in both. It was good enough for him to rake in $306,236 and to finish 2018 with a 0-3-2 record from eight.
No Mires a La Luna certainly has the credentials for success. The 2005 First Moonflash, his sire, set New Mexico as well as the entire industry on its ear when he left the track with a 14-0-4 record from 25, a 122 SI and was just short of $1 million with $969,828. He transitioned from the track to the breeding shed and quickly became one of the dominant breeding forces in the state.
To date, his lifetime 435 starters have in excess of $15 million in earnings. In 2018, 207 starters accounted for $4,380,800. His leading money earner last year was Flash And Roll with $1,213,754.
Dont Looke Ethel isn’t exactly a house- hold name but that might change now
that she’s the momma of a champion. The 12-year-old mare is by Genuine Strawfly by Strawfly Special. Foaled in 1987, Strawfly Special was one of the very earliest embryo transfers in the QH world. After he earned nearly $223,000, his connections remarked, “Well, I guess this means embryo transfer foals can run!”
NM QH Broodmare of the Year
Dyna Mo Rime
(Major Rime-Dynamic Ego TB, Bold Ego) Bred by: William and Reba Klopsteck Owned by: Carlos Paez
Dyna Mo Rime is a 2000 mare who didn’t exactly burn up racetracks during her 10 starts. Her last race was in December 2004, ending her career with just $16,116. She had two wins and two thirds with an 84 speed index.
The mare needed time and patience to prove herself as a producer but, when she hit, she hit big. She has nine foals of racing age and six to
actually perform, but it wasn’t until Major Bites hit the ground in 2013 that pay dirt finally jumped to the top. The bay gelding hit the ground running, putting his momma in the spotlight. He is her all-time leading money earner with $721,712 and her 2018 leader with $476,078.
A big-league offspring was a long time coming for Dyna Mo Rime, but it was worth the wait.
NM QH Stallion of the Year
First Moonflash
(First To Flash–Nagano Moon, Major Rime) Bred by: Dosi or Norma Alvarez
Owned by: Amestoy/Abraham/Gonzales/Vaerl
First Moonflash has been a part of the New Mexico and national industry headlines since 2007, when he competed in his freshman season. The colt started blowing away the competition at three and appeared unstoppable. When he finally wound down, his stats included four New World Records and five New Track Records. He was also the AQHA Champion Aged Stallion in 2009. He deposited nearly $1 million.
There were huge expectations surrounding him when he entered the breeding phase of his career and the stallion didn’t disappoint.
He’s produced eight crops with 691 foals. Six crops have raced with 439 performers. In 2018, he has 655 foals of racing age with 208 going to the track as of this writing.
First Moonflash’s all-time leading money earner is the legendary Handsome Jack Flash with $1,517,491. That may change if Flash And Roll, his 2018 leading money earner, contin- ues at his current success level. He already has $1,213,754 and it’s only March.
