“A champion title is something important and permanent.”
2018 New Mexico Thoroughbred Champions
As noted at the beginning of this piece, a champion title is something important and permanent. Nothing can take it away; not even death. And, as noted, it doesn’t matter if the title is at the national, local or 4-H level. It’s still a champion and it’s still important.
With that said, there’s no denying that national recognition always has the tendency
to function as a status-booster, which is what happened recently when a national racing pub- lication put the spotlight on trainer/co-breeder Todd Fincher and his Kentucky Derby hopeful, Hustle Up, who is also the 2018 New Mexico TB Two-Year-Old Champion Colt/Gelding.
Hustle Up’s victory in the Mine That
Bird Derby on February 24, 2019, presented Fincher with his 1,000th career win. It also gave Hustle Up his eighth success from 10 tries. The trainer plans to put the determined, front- running gelding in the Sunland Derby, which Fincher won last year. It’s a tough task for a New Mexico-bred.
Fincher strongly touted the New Mexico breeding program in the article, saying there have been tremendous advancements in the last 15 to 20 years. The overall program, he stressed, “makes it all worthwhile financially, which should allow more people to play the game,” be- cause they have a chance to recoup their money.
